I am interested in refinishing the tiller on "Brandy" this winter. Are there any comments bad or good on what to use? I was thinking skippers varnish or clear varnish. Also, I didn't want to sand again in between coats. "Thanx" in advance once again. "Bear" C250 WB #089
Wayne - I sanded the tiller down to bare wood and then applied 4 coats of Minwax polyurethane (thinning the first coat 50/50). That was at least 4 years ago and the tiller still looks brand new! I had used Cetol the first time, but it did not allow the laminations to show which made it much less attractive. Derek
Make sure you are using exterior, spar, varnish. I've also had good success with Minwax, spar varnish. Minwax is fairly fast drying. Sanding between coats is a good idea, you migh try using one of the new sanding pads, the gray pad takes the place of 0000 steel wool. Sanding not only knocks down the dust nubs between coats, but lets one coart bond to the next. My tiller is sitting in the shop wating for my next varnish project so that it can also get another coat.
