Kristofferson, Buffett, The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Eagles, CCR, Johnny Rivers, NRPS, Four Tops and any "Beach Music" R&B. It all helps me make it through the night, but not while sailing - only the sound of the wind and water.
They thank you to all of you that talked about Eric Stone. Its always great to get turned on to new artists (ok He is new to me). I think I am going to order a couple of his CDs.
One of my pet peeves on my lake is power boaters idling up our cove, both huge V8s rumbling (with the exhausts out, of course), and, in order to even hear their stereos, the music absolutely blaring. To me it destroys one of the primary reasons I even go to the lake. Fortunately, our sailors don't participate in this activity.
Too late, you have got that song stuck in my head again.
When in Monterey we had the radio on Kbach the whole weekend. I do miss being able to listen to classical on the radio here on the remote central coast. Like Oscar my taste is pretty eclectic but it does exclude a few genre of music.
If you have a chance take a listen to Christy Moore's The Voyage. One of my sailing friends played it for his bride at the time of their wedding and brought her to tears.
The Voyage I am a sailor and you're my first mate, We signed on together, we coupled our fate, We hauled up our anchor determined not to fail, For the hearts treasure together we set sail.
With no maps to guide us we steered our own course, We rose out the storms when the winds were gale force, We sat out the doldrums in patience and hope, Working together we learned how to cope.
Life is an ocean, love is a boat, In troubled waters it keeps us afloat, When we started the voyage, there was just me and you, Now gathered round us we have our own crew.
Together we're in the relationship We've built it with care to last the whole trip, Our true destination is not marked on any chart, We're navigating for the shores of the heart.
Today 16 years after we bought the CD I still get a look from my first mate when I put this CD in the player.
I don't much like loud, blaring music either, but my CD often has Stan Rogers on in the cabin after dark. He's been gone for 20 years, but his sailing tunes are first rate. The song written by Eric Bogle about Roger's death is the one I have requested for my funeral....."Safe in the Harbor". If you don't know Stan's sailing songs....give him a try. The live album "Home in Halifax" is a great place to start.
Music..Like sailing..Great for the soul.. I listen to an eclectic mixture also. Depending on the mood and group anything from UB40 (reggae) to Sarah McLachlan, But mostly as all sailors, its the wind and the waves. With "Leprechaun" on the hard and the Lake Frozen ..
Coach, I got sat radio for Christmas. Got the Roady2 for its versatility to use in truck, boat or house. It's shirt pocket size is easy to move wherever its desired.
I got it for the programming that it offers that I can't get locally.
So far, its been used in the house and truck a lot.
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote"> Coach, I have Sirius on the boat, car, truck, house, garage, rental car, etc. It is a single portable rcvr with multiple mounts. When using in the boat or rental cars, I use the built in FM modulator. In my other vehicles I use an external modulator and in the house/garage, direct audio feeds. I have been using the magnetic mount antenna that comes with the rcvr on the boat just placed in the trays behind the port settee. The signal will work thru the cabin top. It doesn't work that well while sailing, so I have purchased a marine specific antenna (not installed yet). I've only been as far as Catalina, so I can't verify their 200 mile offshore claim. I had XM radio previously, but I got frustrated by my rcvr that could take up to 20 minutes or more to find the signal. At the time I was ready to replace the rcvr with something new, Sirius had a lifetime subscription offer, $399 once or $12.95/mo forever. Easy math. The last time I looked, they were offering lifetime again but at $499. If you have questions about the programing, you can go to sirius.com for a free preview (limit 3 days). Try it at your own risk, it can be habit forming. One of the differences between Sirius vrs XM is that XM charges extra for some of it's channels where on Sirius everything is included. My favorite channels are Sirius Disorder (very eclectic, particularly Friday), Sirius Blues, Folktown, Radio Classics (Dragnet, Gunsmoke, Green Hornet, Jack Benny Show, etc), Raw dog comedy, 60's,70's 80's, and quite a few more.
I have XM and love it. I bought it for the office, but now listen to it in the car and on the boat as well. FWIW - I've never had any delay in getting a signal(unless you count inside a parking garage )I just turn it on and in about 3 seconds it's ready to roll. Also, XM only charges extra for one channel, the one with some raunchy drive time DJ's on it, so no great loss if you don't pay for that. They'll also have all the MLB games on it this seaason if you're into that. No matter which you choose, you'll love it. (I'm a little leary of the lifetime fee thing though, it's one of those things I wonder how long it will be around. Both providers are still losing money...)
I, too, got an XM Roady2 for Christmas. I ordered an additional antenna on the Delphi web site. I ended up mounting the antenna on top of the rudder and ran the wire through the 'boot' in the transom for the rudder steering (I've got wheel steering) and then forward along the deck/hull seam to where my existing radio/cd player is. I just take it out of the truck, onto the boat and plug it in. It works GREAT. Only takes a couple of seconds to find the signal and being mounted on top of the rudder it stays unobstructed and won't be bumped or tripped on.
I like Eric Stone the best. Jimmy is good but I have realy gone off of him due to the corporate thing . Eric has come out to the past three Pacific Northwest parties for our cruising group and has played for free all night. He will be back out this year for our party in Poulsbo Washington first week of August . Manatee Island is one of my favorite . Gary's Island , Big Bamboo all great songs . I have 4 CD,s so far all signed . http://www.boatsongs.com/
Any of you computer gurus know a good way to capture cassette tape to digital. I have an old tape of "Songs of the Mimi" that I want to preserve. The Mimi is from Gloucester, MA and was in an adventure series for PBS. She was here some years back for educational reasons sponsored by our Museum Of Sience and History. I had the pleasure of drinking a couple of beers with her captain who in real life is the son-n-law of Captain Granvel in the TV show. Granvel was a professor at MIT and owner of the MIMI. So the captain gave me a T-shirt and a cassette tape with some sailing songs.
Ben, it just depends on your equipment. If you have a component type cassette player you should have a tape monitor-out set of jacks in the back, they should be a low voltage line level output. I would not be afraid to plug that into my computer if I had a sound card with a line in port. Set the computer to use the line in from the sound card as the sound source and capture the input in a sound mixing app so you can separate out the individual tracks, save the tracks. Next drag the files to a burning app and burn baby burn.
Well that is one scenario. Or take it to an Audio Visual company from the Yellow Pages and have them do it.
Thanks Frank. I'll have to find me a tape drive. The only thing I have around here is a Walk-Man. I might have to resurrect this thread after I acomplish this feat. The tape has a good version of "Drunken Sailor".
