Does anyone else have a hard time getting the main sail luff flush with the mast? I have tried cranking on the winch mail halyard and cannot get it all the way up. Track looks clear as far as I can tell. I also slackened the main sheet and boom topping lift.

Any ideas what I should check? I really dont want to drop the mast to check the track!

Thanks,
Kurt

Check that the reefing line(s) aren't slightly tightened and causing a bagging near the tack area. Also on mine there is/was a downhaul type line running between the cringles (grometted holes near the luft that should be loose before raising the main. If the picture is showing the problem it looks like things are tight from the bottom batten upward looking at the wrinkles in the main. Lube the slugs around the batten and the others. Will it raise all the way up when there is no load on the main (no wind or lufting)??

It will not raise all the way when there is no wind (load). I didn't think to check the reef lines (haven't used them yet!), I will check that next.

Thanks!

sail has got to be luffing when you hoist.

try heading directly up into wind.

look at the top of the mast, is there room for more sail to go up.

the liklyhood of the reef or another sail control being on is highly likely.

Thanks Frank, that thread looks exactly like my problem! (Not sure how I missed it!) JJM's boat SN is close to mine so maybe Catalina had a bad batch of lube or something.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

Frank,

What would this forum do without your directions here!

Kurt,

Your problem sounds and looks exactly like mine. My problem was fixed by cleaning and lubing the sail slugs and kerf. I was lucky that I had a calm day to work on this at my slip. I did have a similar problem previously that turned out to be the reef line being taught.

Good luck!
