I have purchased a new 250 WK with anticipated delivery in April. I was wondering if anyone could give me any hints/things to check for while the boat is still at the dealer and before I take it to its new home.
The owner's manual actually has a "checkout" list (forget what they call it). If someone doesn't have it available, drop me a line and I'll get a copy to you.
Congratulations on your new boat! Here is an archived topic from when I first got my boat last year. Newbie Questions I collected some related issues and added them to the original checklist. You'll see the link to my checklist or you can click HERE . I would also look very carefully for small dime size voids in the gelcoat.I guess they are small air bubbles behind the surface that collapse like a miniture sink hole. I have found 2 or 3 since I've had the boat. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info to all. From reading this site for the past few weeks since I placed the order I feel that I am entering into a fine group. It has been about 5 years since I have been on the water and can not wait to get back on the Chesapeake Bay again.
Hi John, Congratulations on your new boat and welcome to the form. There are several of us who sail the Chesapeake Bay. Where do you plan on doing most of your sailing? I sail out of Rock Hall at Spring Cove Marina.
Welcome to the family. These are a great bunch of folks to work with. I'm moored in Bodkin Creek to your south. In case you are looking for a group to cruise with, Catalina 25 Fleet 8 is based in Middle River. I'm their sole 250 (so far), but I would bet they'd be happy to add another one to the group.
They have a good cruising schedule planned for this year. You might want to contact Lynn Thornton-Conner for more info.
I'm looking at a 1995 250 WB w/ 8HP Suzuki and trailer. The owner is asking $14,900. The boat appears to be in good shape and the trailer is immaculate.
I'm not seeing many 250 WBs for sale. Is this a reasonable price? Is there anything I should look for that might be a deal breaker? Does the WK sail much better than the WB?
John The biggest headache for me are leaks. Have it hosed down pretty good then check for leaks. You will have an opportunity to tell us all, if you would, how you were told to tune the rigging. As Martha would say....that would be a good thing. paulj#719
I just bought a 95 wb for 16, so, 15 sounds like a pretty good deal. I am finding that you can put out quite a bit of money fixing small things. Check the porta potti (100 bucks), the VHF (150 bucks), the Stove (220 bucks), the trailer tires and brakes (they're probably 10 years old 300 bucks). That's on top of the structural things like leaks and missing hardware. Do not ever buy a boat without going for a sail and trying out everything on it!!!!!!!! Oh, make sure the impeller on the motor is squirting water out the motor. If not, that's pretty pricey.
