Since I'm new to the site I figured I'd share my experience in through bolting my keel hanger assembly. Briefly, having had 2 cables break and some structural damage in the 4-bolt and bushing assembly, complete with water infiltration, and an earnest although ineffective attempt at a fix by the yard, I decided to drill through the bushings into the interior of the boat. I put a stainless backing plate on either side of the trunk in the bilge, bolted the through bolts atop that and coated everything at all points of the assembly with lifecaulk. When fully done, I refiberglassed over the entire nut and bolt assembly inside the bilge. Seems to be fine now, and I feel much more secure about the integrity of the keel. Also, I put a stopper on the keel cable so that at it's lowest point down, the keel is still just short of hanging entirely on the bolt assembly; I feel much more comfortable having the weight distributed evenly between the bolt and cable. I could provide pics if anyone wants, but from the inside it all looks nice and neat now...

Hi Bill,

Welcome to the group!

I was wondering where the two cable failures occurred ... were they at the swaged fitting, did the keel cable attachment bracket pull out of the keel or break, or something else?

I'd sure like to see some photos, especially from the inside ... it had to be difficult to make it look "nice and neat" after all that surgery through the saloon floor.

Thanks, and once again, welcome!

Hey Bill, welcome to the forum!

Your keel hanger mod sounds bulletproof.

I like the sounds of that fix a lot. Thanks and welcome! I assume the scary part is preventing water migration under the new fiberglass. Could there be something better for the application than Life Caulk? I am pretty ignorant about sealant so I just keep buying 4200 and using it everywhere. Would epoxy in lieu of the Life Caulk add value? ... or is this one of those over drilling jobs and there will already be epoxy encapsulating all edges?

I believe Life Caulk and 3-M 4200 are just about the same--polysulfides. Either one inside there might add a little margin of safety if another cable event causes the epoxy to be cracked.
