Just purchased a 1985 25.....It is on stands right now....It is a swing keel. Does this keel lower straight down into the water??????? It measures approx. 7' from the pivot to the end. Does this mean it drafts over 7'????? Can it be????

On another note...Can I replace my tiller with wheel on this yr/size boat??????? help please.........thanks

In the down position it sits angling back towards the stern... Draft is about 6' keel down.

Hi Alan,

First of all, welcome to the group!

The short answer is, yes, you can replace the tiller with a wheel. Although wheel steering is rare on a C-25, my boat has it. I really like it ... BUT, I wouldn't recommend it. It is a very expensive upgrade, and you could get more mileage out of your money by spending it on more practical things ... 'new sails, standing rigging, etc. etc. ... the list can go on and on. Also, the wheel and pedestal take up quite a bit of room in the C-25 cockpit, and you'll have to get used to climbing around it.

I know it sounds like double talk to say I like my wheel steering, but I do like it. You can ask an inexperienced crew member to steer, and they'll figure it out right away (as opposed to using a tiller, which is "backwards" to people who aren't used to one). The wheel also gives the appearance and feel of a bigger boat, too. BUT, a previous owner installed the steering on my boat ... I personally would have spent that money on other stuff.

Again, welcome to the group! 'Got any photos of your boat?

I absolutely agree with Buzz about the wheel (well, except for the part about his enjoying it, with which I can't identify). A tiller is a wonderfully elegant piece of machinery -- as simple as it gets. A tiller pilot is MUCH cheaper than an autopilot for a wheel; you can lift the tiller completely out of the way at the dock or anchor; you can unscrew one bolt and detach the tiller and rudder for repairs or winter stowage; a C25 doesn't have the leverage problems that make a wheel more appropriate on a bigger boat; the tiller gives you much better feel for the balance of the boat vis a vis sail trim. As for the "appearance and feel of a bigger boat," I think (sorry Buzz) that a wheel on a boat as little as a C25 is more pretentious than "big boat." One of the many virtues of the C25 is its relatively huge cockpit for the size of the boat. Why would anyone want to compromise one of the best things about the model?

One of the things I like about wheel steering is being able to sit or stand on the centerline of the boat and see both sides when sailing or motoring into harbors slips and just to stretch. The Cat25 does not lend itself to this because the main sheet is attached to the stern rail. Because of this the boats that have a wheel tend to place them towards the middle of the cockpit, to help clear the main sheet. Also I know I tend to sit at the back of the boat more with a wheel than a tiller. When ever I sit forward of the wheel and try and drive I get crossed up and correct the wrong way. With a tiller I can slide forward and balance the boat better.

On the other hand, one of the good things about the wheel is you get more useable cockpit space. Well at least in some circumstances With a boat load of guests all crowded into the cockpit I don't have to fight them for room to swing the tiller when tacking or gybing.

Todd, that's why I moved my traveler to the forward end of the cockpit, just aft of the companionway. Now I sit forward in the cockpit, and the guests sit aft. When I need to see from the centerline, I stand, put the tiller between my knees, and steer with my legs. OR, I can lift the tiller to any height and steer accordingly.
