I finally got Swimmer looked at by an experienced eye. Hell, I even paid for the privilege. Anyway, bottom line is that she certainly needs some work and there were a couple of surprises, but on balance she's in very good condition for her age and a lot of the work I can do myself. Even the work I decide to have done by someone else won't cost me as much as I thought it might.
I'm mighty pleased. This gal is going to be back to her former glory if I have anything to say about it!
Now all I need to do is hear back from Hallett about her 150 genny, could be in for a replacement there, but at the least some serious repairs.
Wish me luck!

Rick

Congratulations, I loved my Merit 25 and many is the day I wish I had the speed and acceleration of her. I have thought that it was great that you had found such a fun boat since you first joined us. Of all of your projects, the windows sound like the least satisfying. I am sure they will look great but they will not make your boat sail any better. I do admire you for not declaring them a duct tape and silicone issue though!
I hope the keel repair goes well. What did the dude say about the keel?
Have you been on a Catalina 25? You have salon berths I would kill for. One of the really odd things about our Catalina 25s is how narrow the salon berths are. They are not berths at all and really are too shallow to even sit on comfortably.

"They are not berths at all and really are too shallow to even sit on comfortably."

I've pondered making some hinged extensions... that would lay flat under the bottom settee cushion when not in use... swing out and lock (like a table leaf) if you wanted to turn the settee (stbd side) into a usable berth. Should be a 10 second 'deployment'... they wouldn't need to be very wide, another 10" or so would make the area usable for sleeping.

Haven't got around to doing any engineering yet.

For better sleeping arrangments, we've decided to go with 3 to 4 boards, cut to size, that will lay across the cabin, starting from the head entryway and going back to the cabin entryway (leaving space at each end for entry/exit), for a comfortable solution to cabin sleeping. We're tired of doing 'somersaults' to use the head at night.

Clam Beach Sir,
Here's to you and your "Imagine" ( as Mr. Lennon said) with your line of thinking, regarding our settee's / no berth situation.

Why not elaborate on the original settee design as you so pondered, with say an extension of 10" or so ( no obvious joke's please, unless you feel the need ! )
with perhaps some kind of leg support under the extension, for stability.

We could store two 10" foam pieces easily somewhere, add them when needed. We would all sleep better with a clear path in the middle of the night to the head, no summersaults included. I really like the idea.

Maybe suggestions from all engineer / FHooper types..
Thank you Clam Beach for the inspiration.
Mike.

Frank,

The keel is really the minor part of the repairs needed. Due to the way the keel is attached to the Capri, very different than your Catalinas, there is no keel "stub" to rot or give the trademark "smile". It only needs cosmetic repairs for the most part. The biggest concern, and he didn't think it was a big deal, just one I was unaware of, is that one of my "tabs" in the forward locker under the v berth is in need of repair. This is structural and needs to be fixed or it will gradually comprmise the hull at that point. However, it would take quite some time for that to happen. The rest of the hull, though having areas that require attention due to some blisters (previously repaired incorrectly) and gel coat cracks is solid. He didn't find any indications of delam.
I've been in a couple of Catalina 25s, they are quite popular around here, and though I liked havin the head room, (my Capri has only 4 feet), the narrowness of the cabin turned me off. I'll be sleeping in the v berth, so those salon berths don't hold the charm for me that they do for you. The original cushions leave a lot to be desired as well. Those for the salon are being recovered and I'm completely replacing the ones in the v berth with something more akin to a real mattress. Those leaky port lights being replaced with opening ones will, to me, anyway, enhance the interior tremendously. So although she won't sail any better with them, staying on her for over nights will be that much more enjoyable. I don't see myself selling her at any point in the near future, but they won't hurt her resale value either should I decide not to take her to the ocean when and if that happens.
