Basking in the afterglow of the electrical panel upgrade (I will post picts one of these days) we drove to the boat to clean up the mess from the panel work, connect the mast wiring and in general get the boat ready to cruise to Morehead City next weekend.
1. I had ordered the mast gates from CD. I went and bought the correct size tap (out of character for me, normally I would try to improvise). So I file and fit until both gates fit nicely, mark the holes with a punch and drill the correct size holes. Start tapping the holes. The tap breaks on the third hole! Now I have a hole plugged by a broken tap, a tap point sticking into the mast. I need to go exchange the tap, find someone who can drill a new hole in the steel plate and hope the tap holds up next time. Never heard of a tap breaking in aluminium. GRRRR
2. Start checking the mast wiring (sidebar: when we got the boat the mast cable had the plug removed from the end, the PO said he was replacing it and etc. I said "never mind, I'll put it on". We put it off until we fixed the rest of the wiring.) Firat turn on all the lights at the panel and chect the deck plug with a voltmeter, all work. So I start poking with a 9V battery and the instructions I downloaded fom the tech tips. None of the light come on. Try with 12V, nada. Try with an ohmmeter, all combinations are open!. SO, either: - all bulbs broke when the boat was being transported - the ground wire is broken inside the mast - the PO pulled a fast one on me. They were otherwise very nice so I do not think so.
Now we need to go re-read the regs to see if we can hang a 360 light from the mast as the steaming light (the running lights work) and as the anchor light. Any advice?
I will be working until 5pm on Thursday and we sail on Friday. No way we are fixing anything up on the mast anytime soon. Of course the cruise depends on the sails comimg back from repair by Wednesday, but that's another story.
Necessity is the mother of invention. I reckon a 360 light might work as a steaming light if you mask off half the dome... or mount it so it shines forward only. I believe it's only supposed to be visible through 180 degrees.
Also, if I remember correctly, it's supposed to be mounted at least 2 meters above the running lights. (or some such)
