A single shotgun vs. automatic weapons... they played it pretty smart and used the element of surprise to their advantage. Beyond that, they were just plain lucky... real lucky. The captain of the other boat was pretty resourceful too, used the only weapon he had, his boat.
I find it very hard to believe that six well armed men, with automatic weapons, in two different fast power boats were 'defeated' by one man with a shotgun in a sailboat.
Kind of depends "who's who" on the guns. Natives depending on fearstricken gringos versus a combat trained veteran determined to kill them are not in a good place for a successful business transaction. A shotgun within 40 yards or so is a very deadly piece of work, as a alot of southern deer can testify, ron srsk Orion

Indeed... at close range a 12 Ga shotgun with 8 rounds of 00 buck in the pipe is the next best thing to having a submachine gun.
If the pirates weren't expecting resistance it's quite possible an experienced and a cool headed shooter could take them out. I would guess it was 'over' in a couple seconds. If the encounter lasted any longer, the outcome likely would have been different.
Too bad the yachties couldn't have made sure all the pirates were dead... if some of them lived to talk to their buddies, the next attack may have a different outcome.
Sure seems to me like the US Navy should be running patrol boats up and down that corridor. Unless things change in the next few years, I'll not be including that part of the world in my cruising plans.
There is a long thread on this subject on another forum. Apparently, the shotgun is the weapon of choice for cruisers, if they are going to carry one at all. It is chosen not so much for it's defensive prowess, but because it is relatively easy to get it in and out of foreign countries that are rather sensitive to boaters, and anybody else, bringing in automatic weapons. Althought the shotgun is a good weapon in close, one guy with a serious automatic weapon could stand off, outside the shotgun's range, and do serious damage.
