Anybody have any luck finding a good coating to put on non-stainless tools, etc.? Ideally, you'd spray it on and it wouldn't feel greasy or oily, and would last forever.
How close can I get to that?

Haven't seen anything that would help other than wd40. What with the possibilty of loosing tools over the side, I decided early on to use inexpensive tools from K-Mart/Walmart. There's no particlular loss if I loose one or have to throw it away because of rust.
I don't know of any specific "coatings" for non-stainless tools, but one trick employed by all old wood workers, carpenters, etc... is to store the tools in a wood box. The wood absorbs moisture very readily and the tools do not rust. It's why you see alot of old handymen with wooden tool trays. I learned this trick from my grandfather many years ago and it still works for all of my wood working tools to this day. One other trick is to save the small moisture absorbing packs from purchased items and place them inside the tool box, very effective.
