i think i have decided on a full baten main and a hank on 110% working jib.
1. i know sail warwehouse has good prices but how is the quality of their OEM line?
2. Have any of you experience buying from National Sail Supply? there prices are a bit better but the make of the sails are not specified and was wondering about their quality.
3. MOST IMPORTANTLY for those with full battens, have you ever had a problem with the leech coming in cantact with the back stay, i hear full battens have a slightly larger sail area and this is a possibility in other boayt. I sthe sail is designed for Catalina, I would tyhink this is a non-issue.
My full roach North racing main overlaps the backstay by quite a lot. Tacking in light air, slack the mainsheet a couple of inches, push the boom over and give it a wiggle if the leach hangs up. Tighten mainsheet. Not a problem.
Steve, you should just go with new sails from Ulman Ventura (Gary Swensen). You can't go wrong. They are cheaper and better.
I've got the fully battened main from Catalina Direct made my Ulman. I love it! The top batten does sometimes hit the backstay, but it hasn't been a real problem. Nor has it been a problem to fill the sail on light days.
The leech over-lapping the backstay is not necessarily symptomatic of a full battened main. Some of us who race have opted to get a fuller roach, a sail option authorized under PHRF handicapping rules. The fuller roach causes the main to extend beyond the backstay a bit. To support the over-size roach I ordered a full batten at the top and standard length battens below. Others have the top two battens full length. Cruisers on the other hand, Who do not need a full roach main, find that dropping and handling the main with full battens and lazy jacks makes the whole process easier, particularly for one person. I have sent my sail back to North for full battens this year because I am cruising more than racing now and sailing by myself more often.
By the way, the larger roach will add tenths of knots to boat speed if you are a racer.
