The previous owner was a racer, and has installed a low drag thin-line rudder. (it vibrates like crazy) Fortunately he kept the factory
standard, and I'd like to refit it to the boat. Any suggestions on
doing this? The boat is slip bound, Could I possibly use the main
sail rigging to hoist it up into the cockpit? Has anyone ever tried this? Your expertises' would be greatly appreciated.

Jerry,

Not sure what the problem is. The factory rudder is not that heavy that you couldn't carry it into the boat. The concern I would have off the top is the gudgeons and pintals. Did the retrofit rudder have special gudgeons/pintals? Will the gudgeons fit the Catalina rudder pintals?

Should be able to lift the rudder ok... may want to clear the mainsheet out of the wa first.

Important! Tie a 'safety line' on the rudder when installing/removing. Beats diving for it if you happen to drop same.

I haven't float tested my C25 rudder, but my last rudder on a previous boat was very bouyant. One time the rudder came out of the bottom gudgeon and the rudder immediately floated into the prop.

just remove the tiller, remove the cotter pins from the pintles, and lift it off. Even if it doesn't float its so bouyant there is no problem lifting it off.

Quintjk,

While you are at it make sure that the gudgeon bolts are tight. If you can't tighten them it means they are stripped (or missing).

Loose bolts are a chronic problem witnessed by these pages. Consider thru-bolting.

I had no problem lifting my rudder into the cockpit when the lower gudgeon failed while underway (after franticlly dousing sail and heading up!) other than the albative paint that got all over me, the deck, the cooler... instant Sailor Smurf. You should be able to handle it in the slip fine.
