Are there any members of the fleet that sail in the Charleston area that can give me some insight as to what marina to use for a week of sailing and general relaxing,(I hope). We are planning on making the trip the first week of June with another couple. We are thinking about using the Charleston Harbor Marina at Patriots Point. There seem to be a variety of hotels close by (important with four people). Any pointers or suggestions?
I can't help you with marinas or hotels, but you're going to love Patriot's Point. I can't imagine that a better display of American fighting ships exists anywhere. Also, you should visit both Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie. Before I visited them, I had never heard of Fort Moultrie. They flank the entrances to Charlotte's harbor, and visiting them helps you understand their strategic importance at the time.
Its great to hear that some fellow members will be in the Charleston area. I think based on the description of what you want when you arrive (ie close proximity to hotels etc..) Patriots Point marina is very nice. Since you will also have your car I would also encourage you to consider Charleston City Marina located in downtown Charleston (This is where I have my boat). They may be a little cheaper with nice facilities but you will probably have to drive to a hotel. Unless you have a lift arranged I would recommend that you put your boat in at Wapoo Cut on the ICW. Its a very nice boat ramp but can be very busy at certain times. Also a really good current to deal with but by far the best place to splash. If you choose to splash there you will be much closer to City Marina than Patriots Point (an extra hour or two by sail depending on current and wind). Have you ever sailed in the Charleston area? It is a great place for day sailing or gunkholing overnight but can be a little tricky at low tide in the harbor so keep a close eye on your charts and depth sounder. The boat ramp is literally a mile from my house on James Island so if you need any help or you have any questions please don't hesitate to e-mail me at natealderson@msn.com.
I towed my 250WB from the Atlanta area to Charleston for a week in the fall of 2002. I agree with the previous post that the best place to put in near Charleston Harbor is the boat ramp at Wapoo Cut. It is a good ramp with lots of parking but the tide through the cut is strong. Getting off the trailer was no great problem but getting back on took several tries with two strong men pulling on lines from the boat to the dock beside the ramp. I suggest that you arrange your departure so that you can pull out at flood tide. At dead low tide the ramp might not be long enough. I put guide post on my boat after that trip. There are three marinas just across the Ashley River from the entrance to Wapoo Cut. I checked out the City Marina and the Ashley Marina on a trip to Charleston a month before I took the boat down. In 2002 the City Marina wanted over $300 for seven nights plus $7 a day for parking in the adjacent city parking lot. The Ashley Marina had a weekly rate of only $175 and free parking. The had a great staff, clean restrooms and showers, and a coin laundry with a TV lounge next door. There is a Marriott Courtyard Hotel next door and several other hotels within walking distance. They also have a free suttle van to anyplace in the downtown historic district so you have a wide choice of hotels and resturants. We found it a great place to stay while visiting Charleston. Their website is yachts@ashleymarina.com. I have never visited Patriot's Point Marina but it is near several good seafood resturants on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. I recommed lunch at the Trawler. You can tie up at their dock and eat overlooking the water. Shem Creek is where most of the commercial fishing boats used to dock. Have a great time in Charleston.
We stayed at Ashley Marina when we passed through Charleston on our boat trip (spent Thanksgiving there). I still have the free cups we got with our slip. I remember heavy rains and a long walk from the guest dock to a place to walk the dog!
Wow thanks! A lot of info and phone numbers. We have learned that the 'Spoloto Festival' is happening the week we were going. With that, we are postponing our trip to Charleston to a later date. Crowds are not really our thing. I will be calling those you have given me their phone numbers to get info and talk boats. Thanks, Ed
