Does anyone know the length of the topping lift wire for a STANDARD RIG. I was going to order one form CD but they are back ordered "til??? . I was at West Marine and realized I could get it made up there-swaged and all. Also what do I need at the top of the mast to connect it? At the bottom I would put an eye and line to rig it as shown someplace on the forum.
The 8 or so years I used a topping lift it consisted of 1/4" line tied at the masthead turned at the end of the boom with a small cheeck block and tied off with a small cleat. When I finally took it off last year - bought a ridged boom vang, the knot at the top was fine. No visible wear. It suprised me but..........that's the story.
I used the old wire section of my stock halyards. I bought a small cable clamp at the hardware store and cut it to length and put a SS eye in it with the clamp. My block is in that eye. It is very strong and has very low windage, and was free. Was the picture you mention mine?
Frank - Interesting picture. The way the picture is taken it looks like the topping lift and the outhaul are one single line (I know thay aren't) but I did have to look closely at it since it seemed kind of weird at first.

Pure genius!
For a long time we used our main halyard as a topping lift. Now we have a small block with 3/16th's wire.
One of Butler's biggest mistakes was that small wire thing. When reefing, you can't really use that pigtail under load. Its dangerous to say the least. And if your reefing on a reach, there's no way in heck you can even hook it up. Your best bet is to formulate a topping lift using on your own using the forum and the tech tips. (Yes I know I said in prior years that the Main halyard was enough to cut the mustard....I was younger and more energetic back then and neither one of us sailed solo)
