Changing my boat's name?

My wife and I are buying our first boat on Tuesday! C-25 "Tribute" in San Diego. Needless to say we are very excited about it. I've heard that it's bad luck to change a boat's name but we have something special in mind. What is the superstition associated with this and how do you go about doing it anyway?
Also considering changing the forward hatch to a Lewmar one. Does anyone know how I find the right one for a 1983 C-25, and how much elbow grease changing it out will require? Thanks....we're very stoked about being a part of this C-25 thing!

LTJG - hmm, sounds Navy to me. I bet you have an old crusty Chief around the base/ship that can help you contact his Most Royal Muchness NEPTUNE REX, Supreme Ruler of all Mermaids, Sharks, Squids, Crabs, Pollywogs, Eels and other denizens of the deep. One you find him you can petition the ROYAL COURT OF THE REALM OF NEPTUNE, in the DISTRICT OF EQUATORIUS for permission to change the name of your soon to be SV.

That is wonderful news, congratulations and welcome to the family. Be careful of San Diego, that is where the black sheep of our family are! They are called fleet 7. As for the naming thing, follow the directions, use lots of champagne and just remember to get every reference to the old name off the boat and out of your lives, never speak it again!

Welcome aboard, Captain. Catalina Direct sells a plexiglass forward hatch -- check with them.

We changed the name of our boat without ceremony or incident. If you want to waste good champagne, that's your business, but the boat naming ceremony is more about fun than theology (spoken as a professional theologian).

Absolutely, Frank. It's right there in Anselm's ontological argument: we're all theologians. But some are better than others . . . I'm not necessarily good, but I do get paid for it.

Champagne must be involved.
We held a boat re-naming ceremony, the only bad luck involved was when we ran out of the good champagne and had to resort to cheaper stuff - its a terrific way to introduce yourself to your marina neighbours/dockmates etc.
We had a lot of fun with our ceremony - making it up as we went. I think the only bad luck is when you don't use your boat enough.

Just plain old shellback for me. I was welcomed into the order onboard USS Halyburton back in 2001 when I was Midshipman Noland. I may have a shot at Golden Shellback and Golden Dragon on the next deployment. We'll see.

When I got my C-25 last year, I knew I would rename it, I really do not like the name "Pier Pleasure". Sounds like it is meant to stay at the pier. Well I have removed the name, and I am cleaning the boat and re-sealing it with Poli-Glow products (which looks great so far) and in the process I can see that it had 2 previous names. All the names were:
"FITS","Miss Placed Priority","Pier Pleasure" and soon to be
"SERENE QUEENz"

all interesting thoughts comments. I too will be changing names soon. I pick up my '84 tomorrow and the name change will commence in a week or two. debating on a few names. was thinking of naming after my girlfriend, but I think that is bad luck.
