I noticed some damage to my headstay so I plan to replace it. I have an old Hood furler model 705 that is riveted together. Do I take the furler apart to replace the forestay or can the wire be threaded through the already constructed furler? If I have to take it apart, how do I do it? Drill out the rivets?

I doubt there are many of us Catalina 25 sailors with enough class to own any Hood products so the help might be a little sparse here. I suggest you call these guys, and you might ask about replacing your bearings while you are at it, it is probably time.

Dave,

You might also try asking your question on

I have the same Hood furler. It is fairly easy to thread the headstay through the furler. At the top end of the furler you will notice a two piece split collar. Remove the 1/4 inch plastic screw that retains one half of the collar. Slide the collar up and then the other side will have enough room to slide out as well (it has a protrusion that locks into a hole on the furler). It is pretty tight, so it may take a bit of wiggling to get the other half out. Remove the shackle that attaches the lower end and the furler will slide up, exposing the headstay connection to the boat and the turnbuckle. After disconnecting the headstay the furler will slip right off. All in all it is pretty easy, but can be frustrating due to the tight fit and not having four hands. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the advise. This really is a great website.

Tom, I got the drive unit off so the turnbuckle and toggle are exposed. Do you take the lower half of the turnbuckle and toggle off before sliding off the furler? I'm nervous about something getting stuck halfway or having trouble threading the new headstay down through all the bearings and sections.

Just as I feared, when I pulled the extrusion assembly over the headstay it jammed. Now it looks like I'll be drilling out the rivets and taking the whole thing apart.

A rigger pulled a new stay through my Hood unit, using the old one as a messenger (with a piece of tape, I suspect). Then he swaged the stud on the end after it was through. He said there are plastic discs at intervals inside the extrusion. He did not have to take the sections apart.

I don't think we have any riggers around here and I bought the headstay from Catalina Direct so I'm going to learn what all the furler parts look like. At least I have an owners manual so I can follow the instructions to put it back together.
