I have a week in July that we thought it would be time to try to sail my C25 fin to Catalina. I would like to trailer it from the 110 plus heat to California and put it in the water somewhere around Long Beach. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to launch, do not think getting the trailer wet would be good so I would like to find somewhere with a lift. Do you need a reservation to tie up over there? Any information on this trip would be very helpful. Thanks Bbo
If you want to wait until July 31 you can join me on the Fleet 7 Summer Cruise to Santa Cruze Island, with a stop at Catalina. Here at Mission Bay we have a lift you can pay $100 or so to use. Or if you have a trailer tounge extension you can probably launch OK at high tide - we'll help you with that!
I know 2 people who will be going to the Catalina Rendevouz from the Long Beach / Port of LA area. That's the weekend before. Email me using my profile and I'll introduce you to all 3 using email. I am sure a suitable boatyard can be found for launching in the Port of LA, plus parking for your rig.
I have made several trips to Catalina from San Pedro. There is a long list of marinas in the area but I don't know which ones might have a lift. I use the boat ramp at Cabrillo Beach and have anchored out there but prefer to spend the $15 for a slip. There are also several good restaurants in the area. San Pedro is the closest point on the mainland to Catalina. My family and I are planning on putting in at Cabrillo on June 30th and staying at Catalina until July 10th. The Catalina Rendezvous is the 8th, 9th, and 10th. Should be a lot of fun.
Charlie, My wife and I are planning a simular trip to you. Cabrillo State Park has worked very well for us for launching and storing the truck and trailer. I realize that some folks don't like getting their trailers wet with salt water, but surprisingly there aren't many choices in the Long Beach area. We have done this trip 3 times.
We are planning to go across to Two Harbors the first day and then perhaps going to one of the outer islands, possibly Santa Cruz for a couple of days and then back for the Catalina Rendevous. Things will be very busy with July 4th holiday. We called the Two Harbors harbormaster and were told that there are no reservations made, first come first serve. If all of the moorings are taken,we have the option, because of our small size, to tie to the mooring line near the beach.
Ed, you should take the mooring line, commonly called the "string line" even if mooring bouys are available.
Cheaper closer to beach (an easy swim) easier to pick up the pennant calmer water in close more likely to be available over holiday weekends.
If Two Harbors is full, you can try Emerald Bay, a few miles west, or sail around the west end for Catalina Harbor. Cat Harbor would never be full, probably room for several hundred boats to anchor. From there, Santa Barbara Island is only 25 miles.
Thanks Jim, We have aways been on the string line. Just forgot the right term. Emerald Bay is truly beautiful. Is anchoring allowed if the moorings are full? I will need to get the charts out before this trip. We thought of getting away from the main activity and business of Catalina Island by spending the 4th at an outer island. In the past we would hit the Rendevous first and then do the rest of the island after. This year we have committments that require us home by July 11. Sorry we won't be able to connect with Fleet 7.
