I was just looking through the May '05 issue of Sail Magazine, and I saw a short article about a float plan developed by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is a free download in .pdf format, and if you don't already have Adobe Reader, there is a link for downloading that, too. There is one additional link for "float plan supplementals" also on the page.
In case anyone would like to check it out, here is a link: USCGA Float Plan Scroll about halfway down the page to Be Safe - File a Float Plan!, then click on the link that says "Float Plan Central."
Thanks to the USCGA for doing all the work ... happy & safe sailing!

I submit a float plan whenever I leave for more than a day.
My marina encourages boaters who are leaving for more than a day to submit a float plan just in case of an emergency. This float plan also notifies the marina office of temporary slip vacancies which opens up slips for transients.
Like VHF radios, life jackets, flares,...etc, float plans are just another tool in the safe boating arsenal.
