Our 250 came with a modified helmsman seat that fits over the fuel locker. The seat tilts up to reveal a six-inch-deep tool chest; that little boost also gives better visibility over the cabin. While a nice idea, this seat is slightly wider than the locker it sits upon, so it gets in the way when the motor is tilted forward. Thus I'm on the hunt for a better system. Frog's rail-mounted seat (under the Cheap Projects heading on this forum) looks like a good solution, but I'd like to know what others have done. Thanks!
Reuben... there are a number of options that have explored. One moved the ice chest and made shelves in the cockpit where it had been. I used the original ice chest that came with the boat but turned it into an extra fuel locker as I cruise and needed additional fuel locker storage.
No question that the fuel locker needs a non-permanent (because of emergency tiller) height increase to make the visual over the cabin better. The ice chest is too high for feet to touch the sole and I'm thinking of adding a flip down foot board.
Rueben, This is a project that I have been looking at. I have ha couple of ideas that I am trying to combine, that I hope will be cost effective. there is a company that makes a helme seat for Catalina 28's and larger http://www.helmseat.com . I've taken their idea and combined it with the Garelick fighting seat and may have something that will work. I'll post pictures of the prototype as soon as it it done.
Reuben: Being only 5'-8" tall I had trouble seeing over the cabin when seated at the helm. Our boat #501 came with a 3" foam cushion that snapped to the fuel locker lid. I put temporary blocking under the cushion until I reached the desired height. I then took the cushion to a local upholstery shop and had them build it up with foam to a total height of 9". The rework cost was about $90. Even though the seat has no backrest, it is reasonably comfortable and provides good visibility.
i am the one that came up with the cooler idea. we got rid of the cooler that came with the boat and bought an igloo 50 super cooler, it fits perfectly on the gas locker and looks like part of the boat. it raises you up about 2 feet and provides better vision and better cooling. not to mention that the space that the origional cooler sat in, has now been replaced with a microwave oven. (or anything else you want to use the space for) you are only limited by your imagination...
Greg, like that seat made for the 28. Mine is a little high and a stretch to reach the wheel, but at the time I just wanted something to ease the rail mark on my behind. Allready drawn up some rough plans and just have to do some measuring. Now I will have to move my flag pole holder again which will probabely need another redesign.
Coldducks, I'll check out the cooler idea -- the notion of freeing up space below is nice, especially on outings of more than a couple of days. How do you keep the cooler in place? Did you add some sort of rim or rail to the lid of the fuel locker?
believe it or not, i bought some of that rubber shelve lining and cut it to fit the top of the fuel locker and added a bungie around the cooler to the rails. it stays in place!! and it is easy to remove the cooler when necessary.
