Hey friends,
I know that I probably pushing the envelope, but I was able to get Abegweit back in the water when the water was up in the lake. Yester day we had cool weather and steady NE winds, so we had a great day of sailing. But OOOPS I blew out my Mainsail. So I'm looking for some leads to a good sailmaker here in Maine who has worked with some of you other Maine sailers. Got any recommendations. I'm interested in someone who can get this done soonest

Hallett Canvas and Sails 781-7070 Promised me my sail in 5 weeks, had it in 3. Not the cheapest, but certainly fair.

Hallet Sails in Falmouth and Maine Sailing Partners are both excellent choices for quality work. I don't know what the lead time looks like right now. I shopped both and went with Hallet for a new headsail this winter. I love it!

Another great choice is to order a mainsail though www.catalinaowners.com. They can get you Doyle sails at very good prices. I got my mainsail that way and it is a fantasic sail. Now on season number six and still has great shape.

I should disclose that I sit on the board of the Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing Association (GMORA) with one of the head guys from Hallett Sails, and am friends with him, and that I'm friends with Sherri Fowler, daughter of the owner of Maine Sailing Partners, but I have no interest in either business. I was once a contractor for www.catalinaowners.com, but am no longer and get no incentive for referring people to them (other than the occasional thank you note).

George -

Theres only a few lofts in Maine that I've heard of. Most mentioned above - There are however a number of major players right down the road from you...sort of.

North has a loft in South Freeport
Shore sails has a loft in Vermont
Doyle has a loft in Center Harbor
Quantum - loft in Connecticut
UK - one in New hampshire and one in Mass.
Air Force Sails deals out of the back door of West Marine

Everybody has a loft in or around Newport and in or around Annapolis (I realize this isn't close). Everyone says that Driving in New England is a one day trip. With all the competition in the NE area, it might be worth your time to make a few calls and see if the competition brings the price down in some of the neighboring areas.

Check out the loft listing on our links page.
Any of these major lofts are reputable. Ask a lot of questions - even if you go with the local guy. Ask if he'll sail with you for a day, why he recommends a over b. What extra's are included. Also, what discount will you give me if I pay in cash. A lot of these guys are franchised and have to pay royalties....

It's not common to "blow out" a mainsail. I'm thinking that the sail may be old and in need of replacement? If so, try the Ulman sails from Catalina Direct. I got one of their loose-footed, fully battened mains and I couldn't be more happy with it. If they have one in stock, they could probably Fedex it to you overnight.

Cheers,

Doyle sails in Plattsburg N.Y. Purchased new jib, had a second reef put in main, main washed and some stitching replaced on the main. Quality and price were very acceptible. Just accross Lake Champlain.
