We have a 1982 9.9 HP Evinrude with electric start. Today when I pushed on the button, there was a click and nothing else. I switched batteries, but they are both fully charged. I checked the contacts and verified that power was getting to the switch.

Anybody have any ideas on what to check next? It was working fine last week.

I have a 1978 Johnson 9.9 with electric start. When I bought the boat two years ago, the electric start didn't work. In my case it turned out it was the push button. I took it off, took it apart sanded down the contacts, used WD40 to clean it and put it back. It worked fine. You might be able to wire around the switch to see if that is the problem. If full power is getting to the starter and it won't go then I would guess it's the starter. Good Luck!

Frank. Since it was working last week I would not think this was the problem but since I just did this I will mention it. I reversed the positive and negative hookups and blew a fuse in the motor. When I tried to start after this.....NOTHING HAPPENED. I'm now in the process of marking all my wireing so I don't do this again. You might check.

I had a similar problem with a 1985 Yamaha 9.9. It turned out to be the starter relay. Corrosion got it over the years. Mine quit out in the bay when I was preparing to return to the marina after sailing all day. I used a screw driver to bypass the relay and get the motor running. Haven't had any more problems since I replaced the relay.

If the battery is good, then the problem can be either the ignition switch, the neutral safety switch, the ground wire, or the starter motor itself. All are easily checked. Good Luck.
