I have to replace the deck cleats and chaulks on my 2005 250WK so they can handle the 5/8" mooring lines we use here. It's difficult to get to the backer (have to go through the anchor well) and Catalina couldn't tell me how large the metal plates are that are bonded into the fiberglass for the factory installed cleats. Has anyone done this before and do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
I did this modification on my 1999 250 WK. I purchased two larger chaulks, using one of the existing holes, and drilling a second mounting hole closer to the bow end - as required. As I recall, I was just barely able to reach inside from the anchor locker cutout. I remember it was difficult to get the socket into the correct position to hold the nut. As for backing - my original chaulk seemed to be backed with SS washers. I believe I used the same on the new ones. I used a little Life Caulk on the back of the washers to hold them in place, until I could start the nut onto the bolt.
Either my original cleat was large enough to accommodate the 5/8" pennants, or I found the next larger size cleat with mounting holes that matched the smaller cleat. But I had to install a second cleat, as the boat only came with one. I don't recall how I installed the second cleat - translated means I didn't experience any difficulties. I purchased a SS backing plate from West Marine - it was approximately 1" x 2 1/2".
Both cleats and chaulks have been used and well-tested over the past five years. In fact, they recently held the boat down during a 50 mph Nor'easter that lasted nearly two days.
Sorry I don't more specifics for you. I was a long time ago.
