After sailing with the wife all day yesterday we found out that she had some challenges with the Lewmar #6 winches I have on the Cabin-Top. We have Lewmar ST-16's for the sheets and she handles those just fine. So I have decide as I install the cluches for running the lines back I would swich out the #6's with ST winches so she can single hand. I guess my two choices are Lewmar ST-14's which would seem to hold the right line size for my halyards, reef and spinnaker lines or anotehr set of ST-16's (which I could get cheaper on e-bay and I already have one extra of).
Just thought I would see if anyone had replaced the cabin-top winches with Self-Tailers and if so which ones.
I also think that the Lewmar #6 winches are too small. I thought about getting bigger winches, but the winches are set into a molded pocket on my 89 model. I would have to build it out with a teak pedestal, or something like that, so I put that idea on hold for a while.
CAUTION: The bolt hole pattern for the Lewmar #14 and #16 self-tailing winches is different than for the #6 and #7 non-self-tailers, which will force you to drill 6 more holes in the cabin top for each winch, and epoxy-fill the 6 existing holes. I put this info out there in case you were assuming, like I did, that the bolt hole pattern would be the same.
I appreciate the need to keep your wife engaged in the sailing. But if you are using rope clutches, why go the expense of Self Tailers. Use the clutch to tail the halyard, save some money and buy her an anniversary gift.
