I live on Lake Champlain in NY. I was born and raised in Western NY, in the figer lakes area. I have been sailing since I could walk, however, have not sailed seriously in 10 years. As a kid, I learned on the Sunfish, then the Laser, Snipe, ending with the E-scow (28' one-design performance).
I now want to get into cruising and talked to an old friend of the family, my second dad if you will. He mentioned a friend that has a Catalina 25 for sale. Not sure of the year, he says it's in great shape, but no trailer. It is raced weekly. All sales, rigging, etc. for $5000. I am so tempted to just buy it and figure it out later. My plan would be to hire an outfit to haul up to my area then leave it in the water till fall, then have the marina store it on a cradle, rather than going to the pain and expense of finding a trailer.
I look forward to several hours of good reading on this site!
Thanks in advance to all you great knowledgeable people.
Buy it. Will a bubler work to keep the ice clear that far north? You could leave it in and use it as a babe magnet all winter! Aren't those girls in Burlington Vt bored out of their minds all winter?
Or, just get it onto the Erie, Mohawk Canals, or the Hudson River and motor it up to Lake Champlain.. I've got Charts you can borrow. Where is the boat right now ?
John, We stumbled on to ours because a family member was getting rid of his 1979 C-25 sk/sr. At the time I was biased to MacGregors, because that was the only cruiser I had sailed on. We are so happy we bought the Catalina. It doesn't even compare to the others in her class. Information and parts are readily avilable. It is a great boat. Barry
John, FYI...we requested quotes both from both on-line and local boat transporters when we were preparing to move our C25 from Lake George (NY) up to Malletts Bay (VT). Bob Guay (Alcove Carriers; 518.695.5652 from near Saratoga) proved not only the most competitively priced but also VERY professional. They move boats all over the eastern US, are fully insured, easy to work with and have great hydraulic lift trailers that handle cradles with ease. I would not hesitate to employ their services again if needed.
Welcome to the forum, hopefully we can arrange to cross paths one of these days. Leslie and I are about in the same situation as you. Due to a couple of life's curve balls we are still on the hard, but hopefully will launch in the coming week. I'd offer a more open invitation to get together but for the near future our schedule is just unpredictable.
John - although everyone says 'buy it!' as in 'now!', I would only agree on buy a Catalina - but after a good thorough inspection and perhaps a survey! You can't go wrong with the C25, and since it races weekly it should be in good shape - but just in case, it never hurts to take your time...just don't let anyone else get 'er! Put down a deposit or something to hold her while you check it out. Depending on the year and condition, that sounds like a good price.
Thanks all for the feedback. The price does seem good. I will be checking the boat out on Sunday. Too bad it is still on it's cradle as the owner has not put it in the water yet this year (this is the year he quit racing).
I have known the owner fairly well for the last 15 years and he is very close to my dad's best friend. A very stand-up man, but I will still go with my eyes wide open.
I am quite excited about this, but like the start of every race season on the E-Scows, I just want to get out on the water, yet I know there will be a lot of prep work to do.
I will check on the haulers from Saratoga for their rates. The one I called from Geneva quoted $1400 if both places have a hoist (neither do), if they have to provide a hydraulic lift then it's another $350.
Another person on this board is selling the same year w/ trailer for about $6000, but it's NYC and I have no truck large enough to haul, so I am in the same boat (pardon the pun).
Where is the boat located? I like the idea of getting it into the Erie Canel or Lake Ontario or Cayuga or Senaca Lakes and putt putting across the state.
That may just require a launch, depending on where the boat is. Otherwise it could just be a hoist and short trailer ride.
It would be about 50 hours from Rochester for example plus waits at the locks and any stops for provisions or other needs. Could be a nice long weekend trip, give you time to start some work on the boat.
The boat is in Branchport NY (North West branch of Keuka Lake) and is going to Lake Champlain (6 hours away by car), if I buy it. I am thinking I may end up buying on Lake Champlain instead since it is a large lake and there are a ton of boats for sale. This one is interesting since I know the owner, know the lake, and I will be there this weekend. Otherwise I would not be so quick to go see it.
I talked to another hauler today that said he may be able to do it for $1000. My main issue with the canal or lake route is that I do not like the idea of getting stranded if the motor quits, Not to mention, that is a long run time for an outboard motor.
Branchport, that is just over a hill or two from Canandaigua Lake. Perhaps you could mention to the seller that I could post his boat for sale on our club's website and bulletin board. We have a small Catalina 25 fleet so we would love to have another.
