I just returned from the Catalina 25 Nationals at Beautiful Lake Cheney in Kansas. The hospitality, the facility, and the race committee were magnificant! The racing was competitive and fun. A great big thank you from the entire Turtle Herd crew goes out the all participants as well as the NSA!

I am hoping that somebody took pictures and is willing to share. My email address is Steve@arokc.com
Thanks
Steve Meyer,
Turtle Herd

Steve,

Somehow, I neglected to get to talk to you at the Nationals, but MAN you guys sailed well. We are the guys on 685 back in the pack on Frank's old boat that we were grateful to be borrowing. We flew out from the Portland area from Fleet 94 in order to participate.

We were really impressed with your boat...your sails....your crew work and your consistency. We kept saying, "Who are those guys?" We were disappointed we were not very competitive this year, but we still had a good time.

Just wanted to congratulate you on how well you did. We were impressed with the level of competition on Lake Cheney this year.

Great work....where is your home port and what else can you tell us about your excellent program? Your boat is a fin, right? As is Gary's Kansas twister and Derek's TR This side up? I think the SR that finished behind Meinert and ahead of us was a fin, too...correct? Says a bit about good air and keels, maybe, in good air?????

Thanks for coming and giving some sailing lessons!

We have lots to learn from you!

We've just got back from Lake Cheney after an harrowing experience in Wichita (dropped the trailer in the rush hour...)
I second what Steve and Gary B said about this year's Nationals. Frank and his Committee did an excellent job - good food, great hospitality and outstanding racing (although a little too much wind the first day for us Hill Country folks!).
Paul & Steve have blazingly fast boats and sail them brilliantly.

Gary,
My boat (Turtle Herd) was one of the oldest boats in the regatta. It is hull number 1213. My main is in its third year and the 155 only had one race on it before we got to Wichita. We sail on Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City. I keep the boat ot the Oklahoma City Boat Club. www.okcboatclub.com The boat is standard rig, fixed fin keel. It goes to show you that even an old Catalina can be competitive. I bought my boat several years ago because I liked the people in our local fleet. This is the first time I've travelled with it and the fleet must be universally likeable. Everyone at the regatta was friendly and willing to help their fellow sailor. I am thinking about approaching the board of governors at the club to see if we could host a future event when it gets back to the mid/southwest.

I'm happy to hear Derek survived the trailer mishap. I'm planning on inviting myself sailing with him next time I'm in San Antonio.

Steve, If you looked WAY back there, you might have seen a 685 on a dacron main. It is from my boat out on the Columbia River, a '78 SK. We borrowed, in order to compete. You heard it mentioned, perhaps, that we hosted the 2004 Regatta. We had 22 boats registered, although one TR had to return to Idaho before it began, due to a drowning death in the family. It was a VERY LIGHT air event and those of us with chutes had an advantage in these conditions on a river with current. I don't think we had quite the same level of competition out here that we saw on Cheney. Certainly, Meinert had the only mylar...

Anyway, really glad you made the trip. I hope to see you again.
