I have a C27 with a Universal 14. The engine runs great and to look at it it looks almost new although it's 18 yrs. old. There is no oil or fuel spillages anywhere on the motor or on the hull which I can see. There is no evidence of any fuel in the bilge. There is a strong diesel fuel odor in the cabin which I'm sure has permeated the cushions, teak etc. Perhaps the smell is from exhaust but everything seems tight and closed there also. Any suggestions? I'm considering a Nicro solar vent. Are these strong odors common with inboards?

To answer the last part of your question: No. I have no diesel smell whatsoever. Would actually prefer that to the holding tank odor I have, although I have it 99% under control these days.

As far as the source.....hard to tell from here. Could be there was a spill in the past, and that it's just hard to get out of the boat.....If you suspect the cushions take them off for a week and see if it gets better....also lock them in a small room at home and see if it smells like diesel in there..

I have a solar vent...they work well.

I've had good success with an air freshener I got at Lowe's. It's a gel, and labeled as an absorbent/freshener. In a plastic tub about 5 inches high and with a colored lid on it. Different flavors available.

Other than that, check the system again......stick your nose in the air cleaner.....check under the tank. Make sure the tank vent is clear.....etc. etc.
