On an inboard diesel what gear ( or nuetral ), should the transmission be in while sailing. When sailing in nuetral the prop is constantly spinning. I've heard some sail with the lever in reverse. This does in fact stop the spinning, but is it harmful?

Hi John,

I also have a universal diesel with a hurth transmission. My manual says"Do not leave gear in forward when sailing. Gear must be in neutral for free wheeling or shifted into reverse to lock propeller while sailing", and "To lock the propeller vertically in line with the keel, mark the coupling and position gear in reverse. This will prevent slippage and damage to the clutch." Do you have a hurth transmission? I would recommend ordering the manuals to familiarize yourself. Here's the link http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/universal/200157/

See you at Brookville!

Yanmar owners that can't afford a feathering prop keep their trannies in reverse. After setting sail (ususally main) I make sure I bleed of speed to a minimum before shifting, as the prop will be spinning forward....and the sudden "KLANG" when reversed is painfull.

The ideal solution is a prop brake......
