Can anyone tell me how long the mast-raising babystays [shrouds] are on the 250WB? My boat didn't have the original ones when I bought it, altho there were some homemade ones that look a bit weak if needed. I want to make proper ones out of better cable. Also, were they adjustable as to length? My boat is a '95 250WB
Thanks for the hints. I just found that they're actually listed in the owners' manual as being 6'10". I also now recall the old geometry formula re the sides of a triangle.
Mine are unequal length. The slots for the cables hook into the mast are staggered, at least on my rig, to not weaken the mast. I've raised the mast with and without. Doing it without with 3 guys is easy. As soon as it is clear that your shrouds are not fouled, we push the mast up (while using the trailer raiser) as fast as possible. I have also followed the advice in archives to use zip ties on the turnbuckles to keep them aligned while stepping the spar. If you raising the mast while on the trailer, make sure you are pointed directly into the wind.
FYI. Our stern mast crutch is to stbd of the rudder. So, when the mast is in the crutch, the port baby stay has to be longer than the stbd. Rather than screw around ensuring I have a longer baby stay on the port side, I have added a D shackle to the port stanchion strap, now both baby stays are the same length.
Ours are different lengths too, I painted the threads on one red & the other green to match up with port & starboard. I think I like your idea better Paul.
