I never knew that this topic would generate so much good information. Thanks to everyone.
I wound up purchasing a 2010 JEEP Commander with a 5.7 HEMI. This was a great choice for a lot of reasons besides towing the boat. If this isn't strong enough, then I still have other options.
Years ago I had a 19' Thompson wood boat that I primarily used for diving in Lake Michigan . I pulled it with a Chevy Suburban 4 x 4. One weekend when the Suburban was in the shop I hooked a 6 cyl ford to it and went to an inland lake to take the neighbor kids water skiing. When I went to pull the boat out of the water the 6 cyl ford would not make it. Luckily someone saw my predicament and added a chain to my car and we pulled it out. I did not have a problem getting to the lake. (I am telling my age now- I think that was in 1961 or 1962)
Hmmmmmmm... I was a "neighborhood kid" near Chicago and waterskied behind a 19' Thompson owned by a guy named Webb around 1961-2... Did you change your first name, <i>"Howard"</i>? Hmmmmmmmmm...
OK Team back after a 6 hour road trip. Pulled by a ML 350 with a towing package, custom trailer with NEW brakes (did not want the 4500 pounds not stopping!) SUV is rated with class 3 7500 hitch, 6000 lbs ball.....and pulled great. starting off was a little slow than normal but 65-70 down the four lane was smooooooth. a couple of unexpected stops when the trailer surge brakes were GREAT. Gas mileage was BAD. After the first 30 minutes of adjusting to the trailer it was smooth sailing. Now I can go anywhere.....

You would remember this boat. It was an open deck with only one split front bench seat with no cushions and a walk through to the stern and had a crane mounted for hauling stuff out of the water. If I took folks out I had to put chairs up in the stern area. Boat got a little beat up from some of the stuff I hauled aboard. I ran a pair of Johnson 90's. I ran out of Waukegan harbor

But he was a Webb. He had a single Johnson 50 (V-4), and the Thompson may have been only 16', with a windshield, foredeck, and seats--lotsa bright mahogany that I helped varnish. I'm pretty sure there was no 90 back in '61-2... that was some later year. Two of 'em--wow!
