I just recently purchased a non returnable standalone AC I was going to replace the sink in front of the had on my old boat, now considering using it in the Catalina 25. I have to loose one window there to vvent it out. I recently ran across a photo of one mounted in the quarter berth with it sticking out into the transom. Does it cool at all if closed? Anyone vent the transome o open the lid?

My 8000BTU stand alone draws 700 watts and is 53 pound, would be centrally located allowing me to coll front or rear half, where as the window unit is 5000btus, 450 watts, 43 pounds.

I don't think you would want to mount a window unit or any vents on the transom for seaworthiness.

If you mount your window unit in the bulkhead between the quarterberth and the lazarette (I think that's the photo you saw), you will need to open the hatch to the lazarette to get effective cooling.

If you don't want to leave the hatch open, you could try installing vents for the lazarette - cowls on the coaming would be best for seaworthiness. Catalina Direct sells some. I don't know if passive ventilation through the cowls would be sufficient or if you would need to install a blower fan. Perhaps someone else can add that info.

The best place to vent would probably be to one of the cowl vents at the aft of the cockpit.

No matter what you do it's going to be a very janky setup with a standalone AC.

A small window unit mounted as far forward as possible in the lazarette would be far superior, supplemented by a fan in the salon to circulate the cool air. You would want to fabricate a rectangular duct over the rear of the window unit that reduces to a dryer type duct and install a blower with ducting over to the cowl vent. I'm not sure what the best way to deal with the condensate is, but letting it drip to the bilge is definitely not ideal. Small sump container under/ Next to the AC with a bilge/sump pump teed into the existing bilge pump overboard line(downstream of the/a check valve) is probably about the best you can do.

If you mean a portable AC the size of a roll around trash compacter then forget it. So many have tried them and everyone moves on. C25 is easy to AC because of the dumpster bulkhead.

I set my window unit on the bottom lip of the companionway with a small bucket under the rear of it to balance it. Put the top companionway board in and then use a small plastic tarp to cover the opening where the center companionway board normally fits.

Condensation drips into the cockpit and runs out the cockpit drains. Will cool the boat down from the 90's to the low 70's in 30 minutes or less. If I need to exit the cabin I climb the steps and step over the corner of the a/c unit onto one of the cockpit seats.

When done I set the a/c unit on the floor of the cabin on some non-slip material.

I've used this setup for 10 years and while not the most glamorous setup it works very well. I've had this setup and operating during a blinding rain storm and if setup properly will keep all rain out.
