The A-Spinnaker I have was made by Gary at Ullman so I know it's just the right cut for a Tall Rig. Trivial observation but maybe worth commenting to you about using it for a close reach.
I've tried to see how far up a close reach I can get with it. I typically yank down on the halyard to flatten the luff as much as I can. I obviously can't quite get a close reach, but as I start pointing to windward, the luff begins to stall and consistently folds back into the sail, reducing area. Just a couple of feet from the luff mind you. It's like having an automatic reefing if you will. Unfortunately it starts placing the center of pull on sail back and you loose all forward motion on the boat.
Anyhow - you won't get too far past a beam reach with an asymetrical. Any other point of sail - perfect. My kids call it the magic sail, since it gets the boat moving when there is no apparent wind.
Hi All, Frank, You can count me for one of the cranes also. I was wondering what the measurements were on your asymetrical. Looks nice and large! Thanks,
I did not buy it, I believe it is still for sale. I has never been used. My friend bought it and changed boats before it came. It is a standard rig Catalina 25 asym from Neil Pryde which means it is a rolly tasker sail. I can ask my friend if he still has it and what he wants for it if you like. As for how high you can carry one, I really want one that can make it above beam. Quantum Sails and several other lofts sell them. In fact I bought a small drifter to play with for that very reason. Until I can afford a new super flat Asym I think I will just go with a drifter.
I sent Rich an email to ask if it is still available, I will let you know. I just talked to gary and he will look into what it would take to make some more cranes and get back to me after the holidays.
Great Frank. I plan on dropping my mast in early spring and take care of a number of issues. It has the old style spreader cups, the Windex is bent and won't rotate, both the mid mast light and top mast light is burned out. So I have my work cut out for me. By the way, I think that step you made is very cool. Cheers.
