Sailing became part of my life in '83 at 37. I'd flown model airplanes for ten yrs and our son was ten and the owner of the airfield had declared for liability reasons, that children weren't wanted at the flying field. I knew I needed to be doing something with my son and we talked about the options and bought a beach cat.
The family camped and my son and I raced the cat for five seasons. I solo (mostly) day sailed for another five years with the Hobie and with an aging body found a very clean C22. Sailed it only three years and with Great Lakes crusing now having hooked me, the C250 was chosen for trailer crusing. It and I have been together now ten years.
Looking forward to as many more as health and spirit allow.
Five years ago, I did resumed flying the models when discovering that many of my old friends had gotten back into it...
Happy birthday, and many happy returns! Have a nice Memorial Day weekend. Will you be out on the boat? Our sailing club has two cruises this weekend, an "away cruise" at Clear Lake, about 100 miles NW of Sacramento, and a "home cruise" at Folsom Lake. I'll be at Folsom.
Happy Birthday Arlyn! I enjoy reading your helpful posts and your great website. When I first became interested in sailing last year, your website was the best information I found on the cat250. I was able to get mine last October, I sail at Lake Ray Hubbard near Dallas, TX. I also enjoy flying R/C with my two boys, but I cannot get them interested in Sailing. Thanks for all your posts in this forum.
Happy birthday Arlyn! Thank you for your valuable contributions to this site ... you are one of the key sailors who make this Forum and Association such a wonderful asset.
Just wish I had gotten the bug earlier. I am now 55 and we just bought our first sailboat in March. It is the Antares and is a C-25. We love sailing and I am not sure if I will continue flying RC. I have 6 flyable planes, 1 NIB, and lots of equipment that I might be selling at the club. Should be able to get enough for a new mainsail... yep I am a full boat owner now ;-)
Happy Birthday! I kind of backed into sailing too. My brother owned an airstrip in Olympia Wash where he flew his own planes. I tagged along with him, and for some crazy reason, he and I started getting more interested in boats. He ended up building a little 1/2 scale tugboat he used for fishing and I got the bug for things with sails.
We wish you good health and many more happy returns on the water.
Happy Birthday Arlyn... and many thanks for your great and wonderful sailing interest shared on this site. Your demonstrated love for sailing/cruising is inspiring and has been very helpful as well as stimulating. Wish you many happy cruising years to come...!! Henk
Happy birthday - 60 isn't old - I pasted that mark last year. So far I have been blessed by the gene pool and good health. Hope to continue into the upper 70's or 80's. Wihsing you fair winds, good health and ahppiness.
Ditto all the congrats and thank you's. I've got 13 years on you, Arlyn, so cut me some slack when I get too testy, ornery, and/or ill tempered. Hope my contributions to the Forum, while a mere shadow of yours, are more positive than negative.
