Dave, it has to have tension on the way up and down. Tension on the way up to insure the furling line wraps snuggly, not to much tension, just enough to keep it from become a mess, and then you have to have tesion coming down to keep the sail from falling and wrapping to losely. The few times I have used it, its been a treat, and becomeing more comfortable with each use. The got the thru hull put in gor the genarator, so shouldn be long before they replace the impeler, and get it running. well, catchya later Barry
