Currently, our sailing club's biggest "peeve" is with the Federal Bureau of Reclamation - they own and operate Folsom Dam, where most of our members have their boats. For the fourth time since 2000, they have drawn the lake down so much, and so quickly, in early summer that Folsom Lake Marina had to close for the year right in the middle of boating season - this year mandatory pullout date for the slip renters was July 2nd!! (last year was July 29th if I remember correctly). In "normal" years, boats can go into slips in mid-March and final pull-date is the first weekend in December. So this year, the marina didn't even make it to Fourth of July weekend, let alone Labor Day, and to make it even more annoying, because of the low water level the marina opening day was a month late - the third weekend in April. So slip renters only got about 9 weeks of slip use for their $1200 annual fee. I'm in dry storage at Folsom Lake, which costs $800 (a little less than the slips), but if I was a slip renter I'd be seriously p.o.'ed. Nine weeks of slip use for $1200 amounts to $577 per month, and this is a marina that has NO water OR electricity at the slips!. Heck, the most expensive luxury marina in San Francisco Bay wouldn't charge that much for a Catalina 25!
We've all had to alter course for the occasional powerboater that didn't have a clear understanding of navigational rules. Goes with the territory. Tonight, however, I had to luff up to avoid a SAILBOAT motoring accross my path. The wind was really light and I was close hauled. When I luffed, I stopped, he sped by, and it was a pain getting back to speed.
Oneida Lake located in NY is very shallow. Most often weeds are in abundance near the area of South Bay next to my Marina. I have to clear the weeds from the prop - - when motoring in and out -- as well as the rudder.
The weeds are so thick that at full speed under power, my speed is reduced to 1 knot.
So my pet peeve is my pet weede.
Oneida Lake is a lake that a swing keel is appropriate.
Hey Larry, sounds like it might be time to bite the bullet and move your boat. In spite of Folsom being not too far away, it's hardly worth the cost to be able to sail only a couple of months out of the year. Even if you only got to go every couple of weeks you would still make out better to keep your boat somewhere else.
