Pat and I are both 57. She retired after 30 years in the school district at age 55. I retire in about 10 months (301 days but who's counting?). We bought our first boat, a C22 in 2000 and our current C250 in 2006. I am amazed at how many in our age group there are here. It is good that the younger crowd is all out working since we'll need them to keep Social Security up and running!
Jim Sweet, we look forward to rendezvousing with you in the San Juans in 2009!!

The admiral and I are 56 this year. I first sailed when I was 8 on a sunfish with my uncle at the outer banks. I like to say that sailing was beat into me, because while sailing that first day, we flipped in the surf. (not unusual for a sunfish). While I was treading water and my uncle was getting ready to right the boat, a wave came along and flipped the sunfish, and the centerboard hit me on the head and I went down like a pile-driver. The 1" thick centerboard broke in half on my head. My uncle probably thought I had a concussion. I came up laughing. No more sailing that day, and I didn't get to sail again for about 10 years, then on my other uncle's sunfish. It was 30 years later that I bought a Capri 16, then to my C25 a couple of years later. Retirement???? I don't think I can stop working because I didn't start saving my money soon enough. There's a few youngsters here (20's or less) ... may I suggest you begin a savings habit every payday. It doesn't have to be much money to start ($10 a week?), but start and keep saving.
