This is not about Constitutional, federal, or state laws. It's about the way we as a community wish to relate to each other, and the rules we've established for that purpose. Constitutional rights and laws are not the issue--an organization has the right to define its own rules of conduct. We cannot and should not act based on race, religion, gender, or ethnicity, but we can enforce clearly-stated rules of conduct. When a person posts on our forum a request to click on a direct link to personal attacks on some other site, IMHO, that person has effectively posted those attacks on our forum, blatantly against our rules.
I am not attacking anybody who has identified themself--I am stating a principle that I believe is fundamental to a civil society in this world of anonymous attackers and far-flung web sites that can be accessed by clicking on a word in any post on the forums that are the heart and soul of this association. Speaking of "history", you only have to go back to last year to see what some of us are talking about. As a reminder, look at the "invitation" from the anonymous "C-25 Observer" on this page in our General Forum last summer. Roam around a little on that blog. It has also been linked to from other sailing community sites, as if anybody actually cared... (Maybe some potential Catalina buyers cared.)
I could care less about what is said about me in that blog--I'm just a commentator and ex-owner here, and hopefully will never again in this life be looking for employment... But I feel very differently about references to Frank Hopper, Duane Wolff, Bill Meinert, Jim Baumgart, and the others who have donated their time and efforts to build this community. I am saddened by those personal attacks and conspiracy theories. The claims that these people had some insidious agendas are ridiculous.
I agree personal attacks in any direction are against the rules. I am shining a light on what I believe is a most egregious violation of that rule. How should we enforce it?
I appreciate the hard work by ALL the folks over the years who have helped make this web site, and the C25 association, one of the most useful and entertaining in sailing. I don't race and don't care about racing, but it's clear that putting the regattas together is a ton of work. I appreciate that.
I really don't understand -- nor do I care to understand -- what issues are involved in this argument. That's not meant to be a discount of anyone involved in it. As someone who's headed volunteer organizations (churches) for thirty-five years, I've learned it's not helpful to speculate on anyone's motives. I've also learned that not every cross is worth dying on. Obviously, there are disagreements about past policies and directions. Let's focus on what needs to be done in the present and future to serve the folks who love and sail C25s, C250s, and Capris.

Chip in for meds? Counseling? Other than blocking specific IP addresses, this sorta thing is impossible to prevent as far as I know. I suppose stricter security measures could be implemented. But that doesn't take care of all of the other places where in winged one can post.
Thanks for the reminder Dave. I guess I DID know that C25 observer and the winged one were one and the same. Must have repressed it. BTW - I only used you as an example in my employer scenario 'cuz you were an easy google. Hopefully everyone drew the connection to the others who as you noted are more vulnerable than you or I per se.

I'll send my favorite SeaTow Captain over to tell him that he too can be sued. Or not.

Fair enough. So, John, how does one go about doing that? We are in the era of high postal rates and nearly every organization I know of is trying to go "paperless." Most of these organizations have turned to the Internet and e-mail to provide their communications. Even my yacht club and my church are going to e-mail and the web instead of printed materials. Heck, even you are using a web blog.
You are right that this move online may leave some people out, although I note we have people from their 20's to their 70's actively participating in this forum. But, what would you recommend to reach out and include those members who you feel are under-served? How would you propose that we do that? I bet everyone here is open to ideas to expand the membership and value of this Association.
