Anybody had experience replacing the windows on C-25 1980 model ? I have looked at the ones from catalina Direct but they all look like opening ports which I don't really care about. Plus they are quite pricey. I had previously talked with someone at the Catalina factory in FL. and he said they had the windows in stock and they were $85.00 each. In talking with the guy at Catalina direct, he didn't think I could get the original style windows because the company that originally made them had gone out of business. Anyway any info would be appreciated. Also I'm the one who had the keel lifting pin to break and the keel swung down and punched a hugh hole in the trunk. I posted this back in May. I still haven't been able to get my pictures of the damage as well as the repair process posted, but I will try later. The repair is coming along nicely using several layers of mat as well as several layers of kevlar. This is going to be a summer of total refit and besides eastern North Carolina is noted for Hurricanes and I'd rather be out of the water anyway. Again any info would be appreciated.

Perhaps you could into more detail about what is wrong with the windows you have? If its the glass itself there is probably one set of solutions. If its the frames, another set. Bedding the windows, a different problem yet. In other words, why are you trying to "replace" the windows?

A couple of years or so ago, I had corresponded via EMail with Catalina Hqtrs regarding replacement window for my '89. First, Frank Butler responded and indicated that he was passing it along for the tech department to square away.

For Catalina's with windows that do not have window frames, Catalina factory can still support replacing the window if you send them a template of your existing window. I attached several sheets of paper together and then traced the outline of the window onto the paper. The cost of the replacement window was pretty reasonable...believe it was not more than $35 for one of the large port side windows. I also bought the adhesive from them and they provided the drawing that shows the basic install. While my existing window is installed with adhesive and screws, their technical department indicated that the adhesive is so strong and since there were problems with some screws cracking the windows, they recommend installing the windows without screws/screw holes...which simplifies the install.

But the story is I have yet to replace the window. I had temporarily put 3M (not sure if I put 4200 or 5200) on the hairline crack of the existing window and since it has held up satisfactorily and not hideous, I have decided not to replace the window for now. By the way, the window they suppplied seems to be same tint and has a nice beveled edge around the perimeter.

Catalina did indicate that they no longer support replacement of the windows that have aluminum frames around them. I think this is mainly because all the new generation boats have no window frames and the frame mfr is no longer available to supply replacements.

I took mine apart, had the frames re-anodized, took the glass to an autoglass store - had new tinted glass made, reassembled the windows. Auto glass store then caulked gap between glass and frame - which when cured was like black rubber. Reinstalled the windows using Life-Caulk. Water-tight and a nice way to update the looks while reusing the original frames and maintaining the original lines.

The way you described redoing the windows with frames probably would be a good write-up for the technical tips section since this issue comes up every so often and very few have documented a satisfactory way to replace those windows.

2 weeks ago I wrote a complete description of the process I used to make and replace the windows on my C25. Very few folks were actually interested!

Very many folks are thrilled to have the write up posted and archived. Our day will come to replace our windows and your contribution is greatly appreciated. And, by the way... those are some Cool Windows...

Many search and read for many years to come!

Sorry for not making same comment about your posting two weeks ago. Maybe it's age related but it's easy for me to totally forget a posting 2 weeks ago, what I had for dinner two nights ago, what my wife wore yesterday but usually can recall all the major details of my last boat project, the last major power tool I bought and the details of all life forms and care needed of the marine fish and coral in the tank I have set up in the family room.

I too wrote a detailed discription about resealing and rebeding the windows, and a very shortened version was even published in the Mainsheet a few years back. I had pictures and was told it would be put into the tech notes or archives, but that never happened.

I think it simply comes down to what is the pressing need at that point in time. There are plenty of threads I can remember reading years ago - and then when the time comes to address that topic I'll just ask the same question all over again!

To all -- I look through the archives often for ideas and details of past projects. I know I will need to address my windows at some point and I am quietly reading and thinking. OJ -- I like the idea of being able to sub-contract the frame anodizing and sealing new glass to simplify the project. Paul and "M" knowing how to do it myself may be the better way for me to go -- but all ideas are appreciated. I do agree that if the tech section could incorporate more or be organized by common issues -- such as windows -- it would be great!

I made this same basic recommendation several years ago. You might get an excellent suggestion on a particular topic one time, then several months or years later when the same question is repeated - that same suggestion doesn't get posted. Sometimes when I see the same question posted for the umpteenth time my eyes rollback in my head!
Sailnet.com has a gear & maintenance section with a few Sticky Note topics listed at the beginning - but they could use more. Even there the same questions get posted over and over again with some great answers and some very amateurish Reminds me of the movie Groundhog Day.
