VIPER Sorry to hear of your loss ,It is so amazing how widespread SANDY became and how correct the forcasters were in predicting where it was going to hit .. I have been contemplating selling "ABOUT TIME " #3519 , 1983 , swk , sr.. I had the boat pulled out last Thursday and have not checked on its status yet . She is in the Upper Chesapeake Bay area . My Email is thelaws@dejazzd.com
The last chapter of Sandy's story has been written in my book. Passage headed to her winter haulout today amid the chilly temps and gusty NW winds delivered by the remnants of Sandy. I made my passage solo as most of my yardmates made their runs last week before the storm. The yardboss told me they hauled 47 boat's in the course of Fri-Sun. Unfortunately, a few that remained on the dock on Sunday night suffered some damage. glad I stayed put. While I passed my old marina, the slip that previously held Passage had suffered some damage and one boat that had not removed it's furled jib and other canvas paid the price. Ripped sails and canvas. Let's hope the weather is done for now…
Well we finally got my Internet back today so I am pleased to announce that impulse rode out the storm in her slip like a champ. We lost power for 5 days so I was running on my Honda 2000 for that time but just got the cable/Internet back today. Two sailboats blew off their stands and one guy left his furled Genny on, Torn to shreds now. My daughter was informed today that it will be another 2 weeks to get their power back on. The south shore of this Island is destroyed, I work there and we found 12 boats from a Marina across the street on our property and lots of water damage. Worst storm I've ever seen.
...and now here comes winter's first classic nor'easter, with wind gusts forecast in the 60s and 70s Wednesday into Thursday in CT--just as power is still being restored in so many places, and homes are covered with tarps where trees crushed their roofs. I saw one 2-story home today, in Darien, CT, where a tree hit the back and ended up on the first floor, sticking out where the front door used to be--a perfect bi-section!
Scott - I'm glad you're back online and Impulse is doing fine in the slip. Still over half the outages in NYS are on Long Island. David - I'm hoping all the trees that were ready to come down are already down.
Sorry for the losses endured by so many... Reminded me of when the RNC came to Tampa Bay and I volunteered so I could get in and see the show. Romney chided Obama for "wanting to slow the rise of the oceans" and the audience laughed and laughed. Yeah, that was hilarious! NOT!
Viper, I'm just seeing this now for the first time. I'm sorry to hear of your loss, that really stinks. I am, however, glad that your family and you were otherwise OK.
'Nother nor'easter predicted in the same spots - NJ, NYC, CT, RI, MA - for Thanksgiving week. Holy cow! I've heard of paying the piper, but this is ridiculous!
I've been reading that folks are taking their badly beaten boats, some that have sunk, and are patching them up and putting them on the market for sale - as is. You really need the services of a marine architect or inspector if you plan to buy this season.
Same with waterlogged cars - now coming on the used car market. When saltwater hits sensitive auto electronics - it's just a matter of time. Rust never sleeps!
