I first spoke to someone named Mario, I think. He took my suggestions to the owner of Garhaur. The owner, a german fellow, called me back and we had a real nice conversation. He is aware of our problem and will consider a solution, but he is afraid of lawyers suing him and then losing his whole business if someone gets hurt trying to operate the motor bracket without a motor attached. That's why he is reluctant to install stronger springs.
Isn't that a bitch. Fear of lawyers preventing you from building a decent product, or improving one.
Frank: Here's a half-a$$ed idea... I'm thinking the notches that hold the bracket in the lowered positions could be shaped so that it takes some substantial downward pressure on the bracket to release the handle to pull the bracket up. A slight arc at the top of each notch should do it. With a motor mounted, it would work normally. With no weight, the springs would prevent the handle from releasing the bracket. Any motor that's not heavy enough to counter the springs would have to be pushed down to release the handle, but it would also have to be pushed to get it to the lower positions.
That and a warning siren should protect the manufacturer from the sharks...
Hey--how about asking Garhauer about the risks of liability for hernias and torn rotator cuffs?

My original Garhauer bracket had just one spring to lift my 60# motor. Last summer the spring broke. It's amazing how much help that one spring privided (or it's amazing how much more difficult it is to raise the motor without the benefit of that spring). Maybe some day I'll bring it in to Garhauer to add two new springs.
I called Garhauer myself yesterday. I'm fairly sure that I spoke with the same guy that Gloss did. His name was Bill something. He mentioned the liability issues, and possible block and tackle ideas, so this helped confirm it was the same fellow. He said they were already working on a fix. Possibly a hydraulic assist, or worm gear. He said that these fixes would likely NOT be retrofittable, and once it was worked out, I'd send mine in and they'd do an exchange. Either way, he said for me to call him back in 3 or 4 weeks. Too bad, because I wanted to install my new bracket ASAP.
I may even consider returning this Garhauer mount to Catalina Direct, and purchasing the NEW Garelick 71091 with the 15" vertical travel. The main reason I didn't get this originally, was that I had seen posts about the springs being TOO strong. People had to stand on the motor to get it in the water. Well, there are 8 springs on it, so if that is the problem, I can take my dremel tool with a cut-off wheel and simply cut a spring or two off. What does everyone think?
8 springs? Wow. But you may be onto something in cutting the springs. That may be the answer. The 71090 has only one very large spring.
I originally purchased the Garelick with the lesser amount of travel, Model 71090. Another problem with it is that the handle projects forward of the mounting brackets. Therefore you could not mount it on your transom without first using a 2 x 12 as a spacer. If you get one of the new brackets, check out the position of the handle. I'm going to Atlanta at the end of the month, and if West has one in stock, I'll go look at it.
Garelick faxed me a set of dimensions of their brackets in the raised and lowered position. The newer one sticks our further, so maybe it's not a problem.
If you want a copy of the dimensions I would be happy to fax one to you.
Frank & Roof: There are springs, and there are springs... The key question for Garelick is what weight motor would be exactly balanced by the springs on the 71091. The fact that it is rated for 175# does not mean it will lift or even balance a 175# motor. I know they're not really talkative, but I'd try to get that answer. I'll bet it's less than 175#.
Roof: If you start cutting springs, watch it! They're under considerable tension in any position--when one gives, a piece of it is going somewhere in a hurry!
Frank: I realize that the spring force is radial--I was talking about the person-power (or even block and tackle), which is somewhat more linear.
I hope you guys figure this out--we need a simple answer (other than "Get a 2-stroke") for the next person who comes along.

We need some real thought on how to fix this motor bracket problem. Waiting around for Garhauer to half ass something that won't bring the attorneys running just won't cut it. How about it?
And, no I'm not going to jurryrig my boat. No fabricated/amature block and tackle.
I visited the local Marine mechanic this past weekend. He had the OMC bracket in his catalog. It looks like a very nice piece of equipment. The travel was somewhat less than the Garelick, but I don't remember what it was (8-10?) vs. 13 for the Garelick.
Even though it is big bucks I have been considering the Garelick motorized model. I want my wife to be able to drop the motor and take the boat out with her friends or in an emergency. Still that is a LOT of cash!
I thought that OMC was out of business. Could you get me a phone number of your mechanic, or OMC, and a part number. I would like to check it out.
I'm heading down to Atlanta at the end of the month (Mom's eightieth birthday) and if West has the new Garelick bracket I'll check it out. I'm still pissed off at the lousy attitude towards customer service that Garelick has, so it would have to be a really sweet bracket for me to buy it. I haven't spoke to Garhaur lately
Those of you with two springs have me wondering what in heck motor mount I bought back in'92. It was a Fulton, don't remember the # but it has eight springs. Works well til the 'ol rhumatiz is acting up then I switch over to the block and tackle, which works when I figure how to release the up/down lock while hauling on the tackle.[:XX(]
dlucier, I have all the problems you mentioned. The setback from transom problem can be addressed with some alluminum U-channels from some boat trailer manufactur. So, I'll address that one. The can't lift, and can't push it down are still THE problems. Garelick's too tough to push down, and Garhauer can't lift it. Garhaurer is supposedly working on a solution, but I'm not sure I can wait to see. Now what?

Be careful with that aluminum U-channel. On my last boat the main supports were aluminum and during one outing, one of the aluminum brackets cracked at a stress point and I was quite lucky that I didn't lose my motor.
Unless you happen to have a motor with that optimum weight, you might have to live with the fact that you are going to have to either heft it up or push it down since motor mounts are designed for a wide range of motors(with respect to horsepower and weight). My original motor mount with a 2 cycle motor attached to it is not that difficult to raise, but if I installed a heavier 4 stroke motor, it would definately require a bit more grunting, huffing, and puffing.
I know people have rigged block and tackles to aid in lifting motors, but has anyone with a motor mount that is difficult to push down ever tried adding lead weights to try and make it easier to lower the engine?
This is not a recurring commercial.... But FWIW, if you have no problem with blocking it away from the transom at least 3", the Fulton 1810 makes raising and lowering a 108# Honda XLS 8 fairly easy. What do I mean by "fairly easy"? Well, I don't lift weights, am not very big, am within a couple of years of 60, and don't grunt when I lift it. <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>
On the other hand, I often leave it down when daysailing--a perfectly reasonable solution for admirals everywhere.
Where I have it mounted on the transom, I don't normally lower it to the lowest position, and in the raised position, the Honda's skeg clears the water on the first notch of its tilt.

Frank... I haven't done it since last October, so here's what I did. I put a new gallon can of bottom paint on a scale, and it read about 20 lbs. I'd say the pull to raise the motor is less than half the weight of that can--maybe 8-10 lbs. It lowers with just a slight push to get it going, and then goes down gently, and needs a little push to latch at the lowest point (which I only use in rough weather).
That's about all I can tell you with the boat on the hard and the engine off the bracket. Remember, it's been a while...

I spoke with Lowell today about this topic, and others, and he says that he is still working with the owner of Garhaur to find us a solution. (He has actually been working on it for two years)
They have tried the hydraulic assist method without success.
They are now thinking of some kind of screw jack, and eliminate the lifting handle. I told him not to forget about the clearance needed to tilt the motor, especially these large Hondas.
When the issue of the owner of Garhaur's concerns of the liability with stronger springs I suggested they add some stickers of warning just like Garelick has. Lowell replied, "Hey Frank, this is California" Nuff Said
Frank: I still think Garhauer could shape the notches on the lifting handle so that it cannot be released without a significant load on the mounting board. The stronger the springs, the tougher it would be to release, except with the motor mounted. If the motor is too light for the bracket, it would require a downward push (with a foot or something) to release and raise, but lighter-duty springs could be offered to the 2-strokers.
I am pretty sure that my Fulton has a design somewhat similar to what I am envisioning--I have to pull the mounting board down to release the bracket without the engine. I'll take a closer look at it next time I go to the boat. But I can assure the Garhauer folks there's no rocket science involved.

I've had the 9.9 Honda XL Shaft High Thrust (heavy motor) for two seasons now. My boat is a 1984 and the original bracket would not have held it. But I picked up a later model OEM with the reinforced plates and double springs and SS mount plate. I can't say that is the "recommended" mount but I have not had any issues. I club race and pull the motor up and tilt it fairly easily as well. I have reinforced the transom when I mounted it and believe that makes more of a difference than the regidity of the bracket. The entire combination is tough to beat in power and versitility.
