I can see from my CD Direct catalog its the Garhauer. The later model has better bushings, heaver springs, welded motor plate, etc. Lowering is probably a bit trickier because you don't want to just push it from the noches or it might hit off the bottom too hard and stress the transom. Lifting is a matter of just reaching down that far and catching the notches correctly. It more a metter of technique than strength. While I would not say it was well balanced it does lock in the notches well.

I sent an E-mail to Garelick requesting an exchange of my bracket, the 71090, for their 71091, which is even heavier duty with a greater lifting range. I agreed to the difference in price of 150. I figured that even though it doesn't go down as far as the Garhaur I could just mount it a little lower. The arms are longer so maybe I won't have to block it out. someone on the post mentioned that it has 8 springs so I'll cut some carefully to balance my Honda out. I got tired of waiting for a response from Garhaur as to what kind of solution they would come up with.

Can you believe how much traffic this stupid topic has generated on this list?

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> I have reinforced the transom when I mounted it and believe that makes more of a difference than the regidity of the bracket. <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

Steve:

Could you explain how you did this (size, material, fasteners, adhesive, both sides, etc.)?

Yesterday I removed my original Garhauer bracket, which has had zero spring assist since its original single spring broke last summer. I'm taking it in to Garhauer this week. They said they could add two new springs (requires rewelding) and replace bushings for about $35. We'll see...

I do NOT want to wail on with the advice to use a simple block and tackle but will merely state that an old, fat, weak (minded and bodied), stiff sailor is happily raising the motor with junk from the ditty bag, which IF purchased new could not be more than a couple bucks, god bless, Ron srsk #2343 (a voice for cheap) Orion SW SF

I have to say, the absolutely largest most frustrating issue I have had with my 1985 C25 is the motor mount thing. I bought it last year with the original mount on it, and it was recommended to me to replace it with something sturdier. They put a mount on the boat which got the prop only half way into the water as it only had about 8 inches of travel. I signed their silly waiver so they would put my original one back on, which I have on there now. However, there is a fair amount of play in the bracket itself and I have been leery of it. It only has one spring, which is on the bottom. I attempted to have another Honda motor place install a different mount on it this Spring, but they're not able to do it for a variety of reasons (none of which are legit in my book, but that's another story!).

Anyway, I just ordered the one in the CD book that appears as though it has 2 springs on it. I'm hoping it doesn't have side-to-side play that mine has now. (Without the motor on, when I grab the mount I can shake the whole mount. The crossbar on the top seems to have lost the "bushing-ness" or something in there, which I would imagine could cause the jumping of the motor I get especially when I'm in reverse.) I have to say that the mount I have now is a bear to lift back out of the water, but it's still possible. (My wife can't lift it, however)

So, I'm hoping the new one is tighter, stiffer and will lift a bit better with the 2 springs on it. After this attempt, I will need to put this whole motor mount issue at rest before I go off the deep end! (Of course, my kids would suggest I already made that jump!)

Some time ago a C25 owner did a comparison with several of the motor mounts, not including some of the latest ones. The one he settled on - and the one I now have - is the OMC 4-stroke model, gas-assist. IT is a heavy-duty thing and handles my Honda 4-stroke (118 lbs, I think) quite easily. I am able to tilt the motor fully and there is no spacer between the transom and motor mount. However, this should be qualified by saying the placement worked out just right so when tilted the head does not interfere with the stern pulpit when tilted. However, the spacer would probably help a bit since the head and throttle arm do project into the cockpit a little, making it inconvenient for leaning against the railing.

The only issues with this mount are: the cost, probably running $380 - 430 range, and the mount does allow a small movement when the stern bounces up and down in heavier weather conditions. I have dealt with the latter by tying the motor grab handle to the stern rail, which completely stops the motor from moving.

I think the mount is still available but I don't have the original part number here. I think I found it on one website but the price seems very high (http://www.baysidemarine.com/specials.cfm). Be sure to specify the 4-stroke, piston-assist model since there was a 2nd lighter-duty spring assist model.

<font color=blue> There's a Catalina dealer near Columbus, OH called Atwood Lake Marina that configured a considerable number of C-25s with the OMC bracket. Their solution to the spacing problem was to install a pair of wooden 'V' shapped wedges (V pointing down) between the hull and the bracket.</font id=blue>

<font color=blue>There are (or were) actually two versions of the gas/shock/piston assist model, 80 and 120 pounds.</font id=blue>

The wood blocks seem like a good idea and I may go that route, if only to regain the full seating area in the cockpit port stern . It would also probably work fine in my case because the xls Honda tilts up to rest almost horizontally and I don't think I'd get much or any of the lower unit dragging except during substantial heel. I installed it so the motor lower unit is submerged only slightly lower than recommended and the motor head luckily fit under the stern rail when sailing - a wiser person would have actually planned it that way.

Yes, be sure you get the bracket rated for 120 lb. I also regularly use a sprayable marine lube on the springs and other parts underneath just to keep the corrosion down.

Just got a Defender catalog this week. (Thanks to whoever is was that posted them on this forum, they have a lot of interesting stuff). They list a motor mount. Does anyone know if it is one of the previously reviewed ones or do they have another supplier? I should go check their web page to see if it has more info.

Todd:

The brackets I see in the 2003 Defender catalog are Garelick models. http://www.garelick.com/ The models listed aren't rated for 4-stroke motors, but Garelick has others that are. If you want to accommodate a high-thrust 4-stroke, an inquiry to Defender may be worthwhile--ask about the 71090 and 71091. Defender's prices are often very competitive, and West will match them.

I left a message for Mr. Garhauer yesterday. So far, no response. I'll give them only a few more days before I return my Garhauer bracket to Catalina Direct. I've had it around a month now, but I'm not sure how they are about returns. I'll post as soon as I hear a word from Garhauer.

THE ANSWER, FINALLY!!!!!

GOOD NEWS!!!!!!

I called today (Saturday April 5th) and spoke to Bill at Garhauer. I believe he is the leader there, as he had a slight German accent.

Anyway, they have the solution and a prototype finished. He said it will be ready for sale by this coming Tuesday. So, I'm supposed to return the motor bracket that I just purchased, to Catalina Direct and re-order the new one from Catalina Direct next week.

The new mount has a worm gear. Fashioned with a hand crank that should take approx. 10 turns to go fully up or down.(this also gives it infinite adjustment) They are also installing beefier springs to help balance the weight. This way, with a worm gear, there is no handle to raise and lower, and the legality of the thing snapping back on someone when there is no motor mounted is eliminated.

It sounds like they have done some great work on this for us. I can't remember any company working so closely with their customers on a problem. Here's to Garharer!!!!!!!

I can't wait to ship my bracket back and get the new one!

Roof,

Hi there,
This is good news about Garhauer's bracket.
I talked with Lowell about this. He has been working with Garhauer for a long time on this thing.
I mentioned to him about the large size of the Honda outboard, and wondered if the crank will clear the outboard, and if the crank will clear the transom.
I also wonder if they tested this mount with a Honda in place.
It seems that the Hondas are becoming quite popular and the bracket "should" have to work with them.

In the meantime I sent back my Garlick bracket to the manufacturer, and they are exchanging it out for their newer longer reach bracket. Hopefully I'll have it in a week, and I'll let you know how that works out.

Keep us posted on the new Garhauer bracket.

No, I didn't ask a price for the new worm-gear bracket. Nor, did I ask any particulars about the crank position and if it was tried with a Honda.

Those were minor points as far as I'm concerned. The price, who cares. I just want something that works, and that my little chickie can opperate if I'm incapacitated.

As far as my Honda fitting. Well, I'll make it work one way or another.

I'll let you know how it looks, and how the installation goes.

More Delay:

I called Catalina Direct and spoke to Lowell. He knows very well about our situation with Garhauer. He personally has been working with Bill at Garhauer for 2 years now. He's offered hydraulic pistons, and been part of the worm-gear process. He said, that Bill at Garhauer always says tomorrow, when in fact it will likely be a month or so.

Anyway, the bracket is not ready despite Garhauer saying by Tuesday (this past Tuesday) the latest. I understand that the gears on the worm-gear broke when there wasn't a motor attached. Even those wimpy springs had enough tension to break the gears. Oh, and the crank for the worm-gear was in the way of where the motor would tilt. So, it's back to the drawing board.

I faxed Bill at Garhauer the last 67 posts here, so that he might have some more to think about when finalizing his production.

So, for now, I'll keep the new bracket but not install it, as I don't want to do the whole project twice. Just hoping it doesn't take too long.

I'll keep all posted.

Oh, Lowell at CD said he will e-mail me when he knows more.

Interesting about the new Garhauer bracket. I brought up the clearance issue to Lowell long ago. Maybe my engineering background is good for something.
Yesterday I received from Garelick their new longer reach bracket. they took my old one (#71090) in as a trade on their new #71091. We'll see if it works. It is very heavy duty and rated for 175 lbs. Maybe I'll have to cut a spring. I'll also have to modify the plastic engine mounting board to lower it down too. At this point I have nothing to lose. I'll keep you posted.

The new one is on! Even though I posted a while back that I was waving the white flag and ordered a mount from Catalina Direct, I didn't end up getting it. A local Honda dealer, not the place where I bought my new Honda last year, just got done installing a new Garelick mount and it is beautiful! They had to put 2 layers of 3/4" Starboard on the transom to get it out far enough for the handle, and they did a fanstastic job of doing it right and even making it look nice. Go gentle on me and don't tell me how the Garelick 71044 won't work, because I believe it will work wondefully! They chose to go that route rather than the 71090, which I am glad about as the 71090 I don't think had enough travel. The 71044 has 8 bolts, for some reason the part that is mounted on the transom is actually 2 parts (which I'm not keen on, but it will work) so there is a lot holding it on the boat. I don't think the Honda dealership was as familiar with the new 71091 as I think that would do it wonderfully also. Either way, what I have now is so, so much better than the old one. After looking at my old original mount, he called it a $99 special!

It just swings so easily with the motor on it! My wife is beside herself with glee (well, actually she said, "It looks nice." But I'll take it as a show of glee!). It is so much more stable and less wobbly than the old one. I hope to launch the boat on May 3, depending on the weather on Muskegon Lake. I'll be curious to see how much more efficient the motor is with a stable mount. Mine would jump around a lot, especially in reverse.

It has been a year of consternation with motor mounts. It's interesting how something so seemingly simple (hang a motor on a boat) can be so time consuming. Anyway, it's done!

Gloss, any luck on your mount yet? The mount you have is THE ONLY one I would consider by Garelick. The mount LeighMarie went with, was taken off my list long ago. Too bad his dealer didn't know about the NEW Garelick bracket.

Gloss, keep us posted. The spring tension thing on your very heavy duty mount is of utmost importance.

Dave and Sharon: I hope it works well for you, and it probably will.

All others in the market: Garelick does not recommend the 71044 for 4-strokes. I asked them directly--don't know the reasoning. It is made from two of their smaller brackets (thus the two parts and 8 bolts).

In response to the 71044 not being recommended for a 4-stroke motor, because of the 2-part mounting part, we atlked and talked and talked about it and the dealer rep for Garelick came and looked at the whole situation and said it would work wonderfully despite the rating issue. What do I know? All I want is a way to hang the motor on the boat and for it to not fall off. I really think it's going to work great. I'll let you know in 10 years if it doesn't!

Dave and Sharon,

I think you are going to be fine with Garelick 71044 mount and it sure does look good.

<img src="http://www.garelick.com/marine/images/catalog/oma_aomb_71044_lg.jpg" border=0>

Truthfully, I don't understand the issue some have with this mount, because Garelick's website states that it is rated for all styles of motors up to 135lbs.

<img src="http://www.garelick.com/marine/images/catalog/oma_aomb_71044_desc.jpg" border=0>

Are some people concerned about the added torque of a 4 stroke motor being too much for this mount and breaking it? If this is so, then you really don't have anything to worry about, because this mount is designed to take a pounding on the back of a fishing boat that is slamming into wavetops at 45mph. I would have to think that the stresses on the mount in that application far exceed the stresses a 4 stroke 8hp motor could ever put on it.

Anyway, nice mount Dave,...you done good.

Yes I did receive the Garelick 71091. That's the new heavy duty one. I didn't mount it on the boat yet as I'm working on refinishing the teak, new gudgeons, new bow eye, new knotmeter etc. I did mount the bracket on a piece of 2 x 10 which is then mounted on some of my deck posts. I then mounted the Honda on it. The springs work quite well. It seems that they have the same springs as on the older 71090 bracket, the one that does not go down far enough. This one has longer arms on it and I think will have greater clearance from the transom. The longer arms means it has greater lever arm distance from the springs. I didn't have to hardly push the motor down at all, just at the end of the range a little. It comes up really nicely. The holes are of a different pattern than the old Garelick. They mount wider, so I'm also plugging up two of the holes. I will install a 6 hole pattern. It comes with 5/16" carriage bolts but I think I will drill out the bracket and get 3/8" or maybe 1/2" bolts. I'm also thinking of lowering the motor even more by customizing the bracket by one of either 3 ways. I may remove the plastic mounting pad and remount it, but would only get about another inch. I may cut some new slots into the adjusting arm. It has lots of room for one more slot. I calculated that I should be able to get 3 more inches. Or I may mount the stainless bracket from the Garhaur mount on it. I'll probably go with the slots. I don't care if I void a warranty with this thing. This whole mount issue has been a cluster from the get go.
It's raining today, and I just hurt my knee. Surgery may be in the future. I'll try to get back with you in a week or so with a newer report as to how I'm doing.
I think this mount may work. I'll install one layer of starboard on the outside and one on the inside of the transom to reinforce it. I'll also work some epoxy between the liner and the transom to reinforce against the compression of the bolts bringing the liner and transom together.

Fair winds
Frank
