Something sounds fishy here. Garelick says a Honda 4 stroke is too much for this mount, yet they advertise it for motors up to 135lbs? What about a 2 stroke 25hp Mercury, it only weighs 114lbs?

Something doesn't sound right here.

Ask them. Maybe it's because all of those little flat bars don't give it as much lateral strength as they want. Notice that the Garelick and Fulton brackets built for 4-strokes use cast U channels, not flat bars. Up and down strength may be equivalent, but lateral strength for high-thrust motors on heavy boats may be marginal. I dunno...

Agree...

I think there's engineering considerations than just the weight of the motor.

Currently maintaining two holes in the water...'77 Venture 23 and new to the family,
'78 Catalina 25

Don, I knew you were a man of wisdom! There is a sticker on the 71044 that says the motor HP should not exceed 40 HP - mine's only a 9.9 HP. It also says on the sticker that the weight should not exceed 155 pounds, not the 135 it says in the catalog. Either way, the weight of my motor is not either of those. It seems like most of the mounts I looked at (which was a lot!) said they are not rated for 4 stroke engines. This is probably due to the torque (and a fear of lawsuits?). The 2 separate brackets did trouble me, but each of the brackets is held on by 4 bolts, which is only what a single bracket would be if it were the 71091. I'm not refuting that the 71091 would be better, but I think the 71044 will do very nicely. But what I do know is that it is still a signifcant improvement over what I had, and that it will work. Anyway, Don, thanks for the encouragement! Far too much time has been spent in getting an adequate mount, and now I need to put this whole issue behind me as I have other things to deal with on the boat.

I find it quite interesting that the sticker on your 71044 mount states that it can accommodate motors up to 40hp and 155 lbs. Since I'm not an engineer, could someone explain to me what forces a piddly 8hp 4 stroke exerts over that of a 155lb 40hp behemoth?

I'm not trying to cast doubt on what others have been told by Garelick, I'm just trying to figure out what Garelick's rationale is for not recommending small 4 strokes on this mount.

I think Garelick's engineering department needs to walk down the hall and talk to the marketing department before their customers start talking to the legal department.

My wife just made new curtains for thw '85 C25....only to discover that the curtain rails ARE NOT PARALLEL!
How do you arrange the slides to accomidate the taper?

Cut cardboard slightly larger than the rails.....take an awl and punch holes in the cardboard down the center of the rails at a spacing as appropriate, lay cardboard on curtain, stick a pencil through the holes and mark the curtain, sow on slides.

Now, on the more important topic of throw pillows.......I'm ordering some cross stiching supplies...does anyone have the pattern and color scheme for the Association logo? Im considering filling them with closed cell foam, they could be a throwable device.......<img src=icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>

My goodness! What happens when you slide the slim end of the curtains to the wide end of the taper?
Or, heavan forbid, you try to slid the wide end of the curtain to the slim end of the taper...and you get the always hated, embarassing 'Rumple Sag'?
How does one survive this?

Dave, Dave, Dave....

Sleeping comfort...... a topic that easily takes the spotlight from throw pillows. Indeed, the standard issue "mattress" is highly inadequate.....so mine is topped with an "egg crate" foam pad, cut to fit, with on top of that a mattress pad, also cut to fit, all encapsulated with a custom made fitted sheet (me and my brother, no not a sibling, a sewing machine).
On top of me is a summer weight goose down comforter in an, again, custom made cover, then we have an assortment of down pillows, in varying degrees of firmness. With adequate support an no sign of cracks between the cushions I must say the spacious berth aboard Lady Kay is as good, or better as at home. Yes it takes some gear to make it perfect, but it's worth the effort.
It's a shame your V-berth is too small to do anything with.....<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

(My sources tell me the motormount discussion continues in another room....it took everything I had not to throw pillows there....but I shall respect the sanctity of the model specific forum<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Well, Oscar, our queen-sized berth is in the main salon where we can sit and stand up--even raise the full-length pop-top on a nice evening. Air flows right through, and the whole thing sets up and breaks down in a couple of minutes.

I do like the description of your "linnens and things"... For the moment, we're settling for the 4" cushions we had made with a fiber layer over the foam. The egg-crate may be worth a shot.

C-25 forum....about 15 or twenty down the list...."got my new motor mount "-Gloss, I believe. You should know though......your in the thread.

Ironically - we all own sailboats and the longest running thread ever is a 4 page dissertation on what we use to mount our motor!!!!
