I just got a GARLICK 71090 ouTboard bracket. I may quite happy with it's performance. I have a new HONDA 8 hp electric start and extra long shaft . total 108 lbs., I used 1 inch diameter stainless steel bar stock (four pieces) 1 5/16 inches long.drilled out 3/8 inches for the mounting bolts.it provides sufficient clearance to raise the bracket to full height and it will go below horizontal.it takes little pressure to raise or lower it to the maximum. I did oil all the hinge joints because at the first try it was stiff. the motor only tilts to 45 degrees but I'm quite happy with that. I think that tilting it full horizontal puts too much stress on the bracket. best winds: john saindon cat 25 sr "Stuart Little" Norfolk
I spoke with Lowell at Catalina Direct yesterday. He and Bill at Garhauer have been working together to rectify the motor bracket.
He said they determined that the bushings now give too much drag in the movement. They are working on other bushings that allow the full strength of the springs to work.
Secondly, they are working on adding a 3rd rail that would also have a spring. The main problem is the geometry. It is easy for 2 rails to work together geometrically, but adding the 3rd causes the maker to be exact. These are hand made.
Third, the handle that now has 3 notches....is to be upgraded to have multiple notches, and also be spring loaded.
These are all modifications that are in the works, and no time frame has been designated.
Background: The worm gear idea that I spoke of previously has been scrapped. First, the gears broke when there was no motor mounted. The stronger gears cost $200. And that was their cost. So the total retail cost of the bracket would have been too much.
Uhhh... Roof... How about the Garelick 71091, the Fulton 1810, or the Bombardier (OMC) whatchamacallit gas assist bracket? Garhauer is a good outfit, but it would appear they're stuggling for a solution based on a bracket that is working against them. For one thing, the arms are longer than most, creating a leverage challenge. For another, the welded tube construction is not as stiff as the cast U sections the other three use. (A coincidence?) Finally, the other three are out there, while Garhauer is experimenting with things that break.
I dunno.....

Yeah, I've just about reached the end of my rope/line/sheet.
I might have to get the Garelick 71091.
Hey Dave, have you had any problems with your Honda 8? I've had carb problems 3 times, and cost me about $600 for repairs of a NEW, under warranty motor. It might fall off the boat soon.

The treaded plastic cup that is the main component seems to be a little flimsy, and won't hold its position, especially at lower speeds with more vibration. The dealer replaced it once--no good. Now he has installed a replacement that Honda provided on a recall program--presumably a different part. We'll see. Funny that such a nice machine has, as its weak spot, a little plastic cup!
