My Simrad 10 (aka Navico) tillerpilot also has the auto-tack feature. You simply push the port or starboard button (they're arrows on the unit) while holding down the "tack" button. With the traveller centered (so you won't have to mess with it), the auto tack feature can allow you to concentrate on letting go of one jib sheet and drawing in the other jib sheet, both at the appropriate times.
While I rarely use the auto-tack feature, last summer I was glad I knew how it worked when all hell broke loose as a mako shark hit and was intent on quickly stripping all the line from my spinning reel. The auto-tack feature allowed me to tack while fighting the fish, so I could get some of the line back.
RichardG. So you are saying that sailing is not enough excitement for you and you have to attach a friggin' Mako Shark to the back of your boat? You are the man!

quote:
Does the autopilot facilitate tacking? I've not had the guts to singlehand because I can't figure out how to handle the sails AND the tiller all at once. Will the autopilot handle part of this work? If so, how simple is it to do?
To do this, all you need is a tiller extender so that you can sit forward by your winches. An autopilot would definitely help, but it isn't needed.
After you center your main, begin a slow tack, release the one sheet and begin to take in on the other. The wind will take care of the rest. Once you are on the other tack, trim your sails accordingly. Its not that difficult. I would consider single handing docking to be tougher.
