In the spirit of being on the hard and peripheral issues...

1. What type of Internet connection do you have?
a. Broadband, (Cable, DSL, WAN)
b. Dial-up, (56k telephone MODEM)

2. If you answered "b." to #1, is broadband available in your area?

3. If you answered yes to #2, are you a luddite?

I am curious how many people on this board avail themselves of the fastest connection verses how many people on this board do not, and how many people do not have a choice.

I have a T1 line at work... so very awesome. I have a BellSouth DSL at home with a Linksys router that provides 4 hard wired ports in the house. Everyone gets a line!

I consider myself a God among mere mortals. Hahahahahaahaha

Off to find a "Charlie Brown" Christmas tree today and get some Ho Ho Ho in the house as opposed to my normal Bah Humbug.

Dial-up, (56k telephone MODEM)

I DON'T want to have broadband. It's too restricting.

Cable Internet. Most of the time it's faster
than my T-1 feed at work. (probably due to our proxy server)

"Dial up 24k with no options. But what a view!!"
Scott... Bi-directional satellite is now available...
Bi-directional internet costs about $50/month if you
already have the satellite TV.

I have high speed at the office so have been too cheap to get high speed at home. The Admiril suffers. Will probably get DSL at home pretty soon. But then again that will make home web shopping faster (!?) May have to think about this...

Ya, the problem is we are Apple folks and the last time I checked, it was only for PC. We also do not have Satellite television so the cost was a bit much. DSL is a rumor, maybe in the next year or so.

Until then I will stare at the screen waiting for things to happen (picture David Putty on the sofa at Elaine's house staring into space with his mouth slightly open) That's 24k.

b.) Dial-up, (56k telephone MODEM). Which is only seems to be reliable up to about 48Kbaud out here on the island. If it manages to connect above that speed, it either drops the connection or locks up my cheap Win-MODEM within a few minutes to an hour.

2-3.) Cable is available here, and I think my next door neighbor even has a T-1 line. However, I consider luddites to be frivilous futurinsts by my standards. I don't even have a TV set in the house, not even with rabbit ears. So to upgrade to a cable MODEM, I'd have to lease the cable and pay the ISP broadband fees. Obviously, the same goes for getting a dish. Maybe one of these days.

Frank,
I have all 3 . I have a cable based connection that I've had for several years. SBC called to say that their DSL was cheaper and just as fast. So I tried it and it was/is cheaper. It is also full of pop-ups and adds . It is nowhere near as fast as the cable modem. I am just waiting for the contract to expire to get rid of it. I also have a dial up service that is used primarily when I am traveling for work (which is frequently)

DSL with a wireless router for my business notebook--very nice! We chose DSL over cable to get dialup access from wherever we might be (and as backup)--not available from our cable provider. Cable might be a little faster, but DSL takes care of us--even for the multi-MB file transfers I do for business.

56k dial-up...it does what I want and I don't find it too slow for my needs.

Cable. I previously had DSL, but was at the end of the line, or too far from a switching box. It was terrible.

1.At work I have a T1
Out here in WV I have dial up at 33800 on a good day usually 28800, so I usually run with signatures disabled. Verizon might have DSL available - they aren't too sure themselves. Cable - dream on - 28000 people scattered over 600 square miles.

Snail Mail, have to go to work 40 miles away to get Broad Ban, We might have cable in a couple of years if they can figure out how to stop the farmers around here from plowing it up every spring.

We live in the country north of San Diego on a small family farm. We have Direct TV (satellite). Satellite internet is available, but at a huge cost. Cable is not available. AT&T finally offered iDSL in our area. It is 150kb. This plugs into a DLink 4 port wireless router. The DLink connects my desktop, Karen's and the kids. We have a 4th computer offline, and 2 more stored somewhere.

The iDSL costs $90/month and meets all our needs. It's great.

If I bring my department laptop home I use a direct dialup with that.

That's funny.

Dial up, 28K because of crappy phone lines......1/2 mile from two-way everything no matter which way I leave my drive way. At my house I can only get one way cable.....so the first one that offers two way something gets my money. Interestingly, PP&L has discovered that the have the key to "the last mile", and a huge fiber optic network running around town, which they put in for business use. They are experimenting with a number of households. It would turn every wall outlet into an access point. Soon hopefully.

No. People often call me a "renaissance man"....I gues that means I have to build my own high speed system.....
