You could also go with a smaller engine (unless you really need the XLS). My 6hp Tohatsu will get 3 hours+/gallon @ 1/2-3/4 throttle (4.5-5 knots). Wide open, it will get 2 hours/gallon. If you looking to conserve fuel, then you wouldn't want to run at much more than 5 knots anyway.
Remember, If you are running 5mph vs 6mph your mpg will be greater. I doubt I would want to be caught 35 miles from a suitable port with a motor that was not powerful enough to drive the boat at hull speed against a headwind. If you take a finite ammount of fuel than you will be need to ensure you can sail the first 20 miles to ensure you have enough trip fuel. One more jerry can would cover that gap and does not pose any problem at all until you put gas in it. You could use it for the one trip and donate it to someone at the marina. At $6 it is the least of the worries. Just my 2 c worth. Been shopping for a suitable tow vehicle so I may be able to join you.

But with a limited amount of fuel, it will take you a lot further (turtle vs hare concept).
Truth is, if I had some wind, I'd be more inclined to use the sails anyway.
