Tony,

Timing is everythiing in that case. Great name for your boat!

Not to sound too ignorant, but what the heck does SOASOAS mean?

Ed... You'll probably have trouble getting much sympathy here over that $240... Do you suppose that increase might support some improvements to the things you're complaining about? Maybe that's something to organize about.

Son Of A Son Of A Sailor (1978) - Jimmy Buffett

As the son of a son of a sailor
I went out on the sea for adventure
Expanding the view of the captain and crew
Like a man just released from indenture

As a dreamer of dreams and a travelin’ man
I have chalked up many a mile
Read dozens of books about heroes and crooks
And I learned much from both of their styles

Chorus:
Son of a son, son of a son
Son of a son of a sailor
Son of a gun, load the last ton
One step ahead of the jailer

Now away in the near future
Southeast of disorder
You can shake the hand of the mango man
As he greats you at the border

And the lady she hails from trinidad
Island of the spices
Salt for your meat, and cinnamon sweet
And the rum is for all your good vices

Haul the sheet in as we ride on the wind
That our forefathers harnessed before us
Hear the bells ring as the tight rigging sings
It’s a son of a gun of a chorus

Where it all ends I can’t fathom my friends
If I knew I might toss out my anchor
So I cruise along always searchin’ for songs
Not a lawyer a thief or a banker

But a son of a son, son of a son
Son of a son of a sailor
Son of a gun, load the last ton
One step ahead of the jailer

I’m just a son of a son, son of a son
Son of a son of a sailor
The sea’s in my veins, my tradition remains
I’m just glad I don’t live in a trailer

If their rationale for the increase is to improve the facilities and services, they should have made the improvements at the time they announced the rent increase, so people could see that they're getting something for their money.

A slip on Leech Lake (northern Minnesota) goes from $1500 to $2000 per year, depending on boat size. That includes winter storage -- indoors, at our marina, if you're willing to take your mast down. It seems expensive, but demand exceeds supply. Crane-in is late April, crane-out early October.

Don,
Thanks for answering Jeff's question for me. We were in Tacoma over the weekend getting Mental Floss put on the trailer.

Grampa Dillon used to sail his wooden sloop in Hood Canal, but according to my older brother, only on the days that it was blowing like stink, along with my dad.

Jeff,
Thanks, we agonized over a name for the boat for a long time, but being Buffett fans we decided the name was the only answer.

I'm on a mooring in front of the condo... I own the mooring, no town mooring fees. The condo association has a small dock with water and power for temporary use only. Winter storage is at a marina not too far away. Cost is around $750. Don't know what the price of the slips are there.

Dave, When I read about all the wonderful facilities other writers discribe with pools, showers, water, and electricity I do get a bit envious. All improvements made to the marina in the past 3 years have been for the rental fleet both houseboats and powercraft. We do have one of the best managed water sheds in the Sierra Nevada foothills. This means plenty of water in most years. There are a great group of sailing people on the lake along with good winds and warm water in the summer. In the winter the marina is at least 50% empty. If they lowered the slip fees maybe more folks would leave their boats in the water year around and make more money.

I realize that prices need to go up in order for the concessionair to make a buck, but honestly, a 100% increase in one year is a little extreme.

Around here the cost of a slip is a moot point as you can't get one. I do think you could get a mooring at Port San Luis right now as the fishing fleet has been diminishing along with the fish population.

Ed I know its a long ways from where you like to go but the Moccasain point marina was MUCH nicer than the one where you all stay. We ended up renting a slip from them for two nights this past summer.

Todd, Forever Resorts owns that marina also. All slips and moorings on the lake are going up. They have a monopoly.

For me it depends on what expense account you allocate the expenses.

Based on these fees ---

http://www.eycweb.com/PagesASP/gue/fees.asp

Strictly for the dock, I am paying 19.50 x 42 dock feet --- 819 dollars and 400 for winter storage. Haul in and out is included with that. (also includes water and electric, bathroom, shower)

I couldn't have the dock if I wasn't a member - so you could theoretically add another $105 a month in dues , but I tend to categorize most of that as "I woulda spent it somewhere else money"
The 40 bucks minimum food - comes out of the "gotta eat" fund, so I don't consider that either.

I was paying 2650 a season for a cramped 25 (measure 24.5) foot dock, a can and a shower, shared electric (6 boats 4 outlets) water and crappy security. Plus another 450 for storage in a gravel lot. After running the numbers, the additional amenities and sail oriented location (less stink boats) definitely justified the initiation and dues.

That's the full amount...

We each have separate Dues and monthly minimum at the restaurant. My co-owner joined via marriage, so he would have been paying the membership and minimum even if we didn't move the boat to the club..I pay half of the slip and half of the storage.

At Lake Mead Echo Bay I pay 98 dollars a month. Has it all. Lake is low but we still have plenty of water to sail. Hot in the summer but right now it is great.
